It seems like I know so many individuals who are Catholic by tradition, but very few are practicing or truly believe in this unique denomination.

Who here is Catholic, to what extent (were you, like me baptized in the Church but no longer practice or are you devout), what are your thoughts on this controversial group?

I'm thinking of giving it another go, out of nostalgia I guess. However, I don't want to be seen a a whack job, lol. That's how I feel many folks, especially the younger crowd, now view Catholics.

The normal baptism as a kid but now a days I like asking questions and thinking with an open mind.
I now realize Jesus is overrated by Catholics.

My whole dad's side is Catholic.

I started going to a United Methodist church right before high school. I still don't know why any allegiance to any denomination exists...it is so dumb.

Because each different denomination has a different set of beliefs. Most will believe in heaven and hell, but will believe in different ways of getting there. Baptists believe that it is by grace, and must have Christ as your personal savior. Other religions believe that good works alone can get you there, etc.

My father in laws family, mother in law, and sister and brother in law are Catholic.

We were actually at my sister in laws wedding a couple of weeks ago. Full Catholic wedding. I was sitting behind my father in laws mother. They started doing the whole up and down kneeling bullshit. She got pissed because I wasn't doing it and turned around and told me I should be kneeling down. I told her to shut the hell up because I'm not Catholic. She wasn't very happy about that. :o

Grew up in a huge Irish Catoleigh family and am one of the only few to escape the hypocrisy. My sisters all pray for my soul bc I'm surely destined for the train to Hell. I still love St Paddys Day more than Christmas but thats only bc beer tastes much better than sacrament wine.

Catholic. Not quite practicing. I will get married in a Catholic Church though. I'm big on tradition. I went to Catholic school for eleven years.

I was brought up Catholic....baptized, communion, summer Bible school, Sunday school....the whole nine.

I quit completely when I was around 14, right before I had to start preparing for confirmation. I just didn't buy it....any of it. I felt like I was faking it the entire time and only going on with it to appease my mother.

I appreciate the moral values that it provided, but other than that....a huge sham. I won't be bringing up my future kids in the same fashion.

I understand that. But, that's exactly against what is spelled out in the scriptures.

Other religions, that's different; they use other "sacred" texts. But when each Christian denomination uses the Bible...it's a bit lousy to align with one denomination or another. Especially when one thinks their denomination is superior to another when it all comes back to the Bible and Jesus' words.

Each denomination interprets the texts differently, some down to the most minute detail.

Yes. I do know this.

They forget the part where there really shouldn't be any denominations. That's what I am getting at. Maybe they should start with interpreting that.

I don't see any part that prohibits denominationalism. I see that there is supposed to be a "lack of divisiveness" and an absence of quarreling, but I don't see why denominationalism automatically assumes those.

Two groups of people are permitted to have different views. They should simply get along and love each other in spite of that, not feud because of it.
