Roaming around Southeast Asia, in Bangkok, Malaysia and Bali. Not only is it one of the most beautiful and pulsating regions on the face of the earth, with its crystal-clear beaches, wild party nightlife and adrenaline-filled downtown atmospheres, it's also incredibly cheap to travel, all things considered. Much more so than many places in Europe or other tropical destinations. While I have never been, many say you can stay there for months on a budget that would give you three weeks or less on European backpacking vacations. The major downfall of Southeast Asia is the region's relatively strict drug law; getting caught with narcotics can get you beheaded.

While drugs are not essential to a great vacation, if you are somebody who enjoys that sort of thing or is prone to a particular brand of drinking and partying that might lead to that kind of behavior -- Vegas, anyone? -- this isn't the vacation for you.

Ever seen the 1998 movie Return to Paradise with Joaquin Phoenix? It's a real eye-opener and scary as shit. It's about how a group of friends from the states go to party in Malaysia and they do hash and then when it is time to leave one of them doesn't get to leave because
Spoiler
police arrest them and he gets his head chopped off.

This wikipedia page documenting a particular capital punishment case due to drug possession in Malaysia is pretty interesting. Granted, they were carrying 141 grams of heroin. However, from what I have read, the amount of drugs you have on you doesn't have to be that much to be considered trafficking. Enough drugs for you and your friends might just be a lethal amount.

I have a friend who lives in the Maldives, he's been complaining about having to watch football games at 2am. Hehe

I'd go to Alaska because I've had plenty of nice tropical vacations. Scenery & fishing up there has me wanting to finally go now that a close cousin of mine has moved back, NE of Fairbanks.

Yikes. Wonder how much weed it would take to get your head lopped off.

I don't know the answer to that, but had the King of Pop ever performed in Kuala Lumpur we might have found out. Maybe not for weed, but I imagine recreational Diprivan is probably frowned upon.

Was in India and the Seychelles last February. While beautiful I was miserable because I was sick virtually everyday. If it wasn't the terrible bottled water (bisleri made me sick days 1-9, dasani 10-14), it was the travel on their woeful roads. I don't get road sick but riding in a van in India was like riding in a paint mixer. Third world countries which many in the se pacific are, is a crap shoot. Stay on the resort otherwise you ate gonna get held captive in the bathroom from their bottled water. Give me europe's beaches on the riviera or the mediterranean over Bali and bora bora.

Those are certainly helpful first-hand experiences to hear before making a trip so that you know some of what you might encounter. I would still love to visit the energetic urban areas of SE Asia. Bangkok at night would be something else, I imagine.

If there is any place else in the world I'd want to spend a good week, though, it's the French Riviera. Monaco and Nice, in particular. I agree there. Those are my types of places.

If you want a relaxing vacation for two weeks, SE Asia is the way to go. It is very easy to get to Bali, Thailand, Hanoi, etc. and spend 3-4 days in each place and not get bored. Flights are relatively cheap and even if you don't get a direct you connect though Changi in Singapore which IMO is a vacation in itself.

Europe is fun, but every time I go there I feel like I need a vacation after a vacation. I feel like I have to see everything and I don't get a chance to relax.

I"m kind of hesitant to leave the country these days. I'd just go to the Keys or something.

Best response possible. Reps to come.

I'd probably go to Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

Either that or maybe stay at the Sands Skypark in Singapore.
