Sounds like a ploy to get you to think your wife is in Chicago with a heartbroken friend, and not another dude (which seems more likely). I'd stalk her friend and make sure she's not really at home covering for your wife.

I've made it a habit not to say a word about any issues that my friends (or my wife's friends) are having with their significant others. Been burned too many times in the past by trying to console someone saying that they are better off because the person that they were with was a douche and that I never really liked them anyways...only to have the person reconcile and now I look like the asshole.
