I'm not knocking Kobe for his 30k points mark he reached... but an ESPN article tries to do a little spinning that I found amusing:

http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/story/_/id/8718559/kobe-bryant-los-angeles-lakers-becomes-youngest-player-nba-history-score-30000-career-points
Bryant joins Chamberlain (31,419 points),Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387), Karl Malone(36,928) and Michael Jordan (32,292) as the only five players in NBA history to reach the 30,000-point plateau.

Bryant was the fifth-fastest player -- in terms of games played -- to reach the milestone, needing 1,179. Chamberlain was the fastest at 941 games, followed by Jordan (960), Abdul-Jabbar (1,101) and Malone (1,152).

If there were 5 to do it, and you were the 5th "Fastest" to do it, some may call that being the slowest, not the 5th fastest.

I dont see it as spinning, i see it as 30,000 points is an INCREDIBLE feat and saying slowest sounds like it might downgrade the achievement some. Or, he said exactly what he wanted too and didnt sit there thinking about how some people will interpret it.

I agree that 30k points is incredible. I don't mean to diminish that. I just found it humorous and you can tell the writer saw some contradiction as the article was written in a way where it threw in some information (a few paragraphs) between the statements to try to obscure the wording.

Essentially they articles started off with a little blurb about the game, then it goes into the statistics and heralding that he is the youngest (Age wise) to do it. Then it has a few quotes from different people. Then it jumps back into the statistics to mention that he was the 5th fastest to do it. Then quotes again.

It looks like they intentionally tried to separate those two pieces of information to hide the fact that being 5th "Fastest" means actually slowest. Just because someone is amazing doesn't mean that they also can't be last.

In track and field in the final heat, these are all incredibly fast human beings... the person who comes in 8th isn't usually referred to as the 8th fastest person in the finals, but he's last.

I don't think it was a big deal, I found it amusing though.

Kobe is a top 10 all-time player but he'll never be better than Shaq.

I'd say that could be nicely debated....but I don't care to be a part of it. Without delving in....they are pretty close.

You trying to show that he was a douche in high school as well? If so...likely right.

Other than the fact that he is way better in the NBA than I anticipated...I just can't stand how he goes about his stuff.

I was more interested in the NBA more last year than ever.....until the ASB. I lost interest the last half until about the 2nd round of the playoffs.

And their coach is a student/former player of Bobby Knight. He has them and will continue to have them playing hard on both ends...especially in crunch time and playoffs.
