I don't mind 5k's, but my friend wants to sign up for a 10k and I really don't like them.

Mine does not say "running group". Clearly a different joke.

Whats your average 5k time? Do you keep track of your mile splits by chance? Curious what is your 1st mile compared to the 3rd mile in your 5k?

Instead of thinking like you are racing a 10k, treat it like back-to-back 5k's.

I know this thread is a joke but I like playing the dorky distance runner.

I lol'd even if it is a stolen joke. Almost all jokes are stole anyway, and it's the first I've heard it. Well done.

On a more serious note...10k is a very difficult race distance. You carry almost the same speed as a 5k race but for more than 6 miles.

I would rather run a 1/2 marathon or a 5k any day. 10Ks just hurt.

Didn't mean to actually start a conversation about running. Mods can shut this thread down.

52 flat is my only 10K time ever.
20:40 is my 5K record. Usually I am between 22-24 depending on training.
I try to stay steady and if anything left, sprint the last 2/10 mile.
I don't plan on running anything over a 10K at my age.
I will continue spint and olympic triathalons, not too hard on the kness.

So you'd rather run 21.1K than a 10K?

Yes. Half marathon is a distance where I know I must pace myself and sort of "just run" if you will. Whereas with something like a 10k I know that it's short enough that I can push myself and end up doing just that. So in that way 10ks can hurt more than a 21.1k.

Ah. Makes sense, I suppose.

You can tell I was never a distance runner. This would never have occurred to me.

The issue with the 10K is that you have to train specifically for it, and its a much more rigorous training schedule than for a 5K or a half-marathon. The 5K is so short you really don't need a lot miles per week to be relatively successful, just be fast, and to train for the half you just need to run a lot. The 10K is actually my "best" race (I'm only marginally faster in the 5K splitting the time and my half is several minutes off per mile) - but I mix up my runs and do a lot of 800 and 1600 "sprints" and other training days to be able to maintain a near 5K pace for twice the distance.

They put all the slow and out-of-shape people at the back. Seems like they are stacking the deck against them.

10Ks are my favorite. I never understood why they were only ran for regionals and nationals in college but for all other meets during the year it was 8ks.

True. To bore everyone with more running talk, I've hurt my worse ever in a 2 mile or 5k race, simply because you are kinda uncomfortable for the first half and really uncomfortable the other. Been closest to passing out after a 3200m or 5k race too.

I've ran a handful of half marathons (running the AF half marathon this Saturday) and like IW Pants mentioned, it's just about pacing. I'll run the first 8-9ish miles slow and depending how I feel, push the last 4'ish miles.

I can not remember if you've mentioned in the past, where did you run?
