To me if you cant live in the woods with a knife some fishing line and a hook for longer then a week you are stupid. Everything I have learned in life has taught me to survive. I might not be able to build a rocket or program a computer but I can survive on my own and live.

Wouldn't our less-evolved ancestors be able to do these?mcburg93;1227219 wrote:To me if you cant live in the woods with a knife some fishing line and a hook for longer then a week you are stupid. This depends where they were raised. Inner city people prolly couldnt survive. Im not trying to classify and its only my opinion.O-Trap;1227236 wrote:Wouldn't our less-evolved ancestors be able to do these?
I went and helped on a survival course when I was younger during the summers. You wouldnt believe how stupid smart people really are about being able to survive. Most of the people had no clue how to bait a hook or tie a hook to a line. They had a hard time grasping the concept of keep it simple. They tend to over think things. Teaching them to butcher something that they kill is even harder to do. I guess growing up in bfe has had its advantages.

What I meant was, the things you've just attributed to being "smart" (ie being able to survive) can be ascribed to our more Neanderthalic ancestors. Were they "smart" by your standards, then?mcburg93;1227243 wrote:This depends where they were raised. Inner city people prolly couldnt survive. Im not trying to classify and its only my opinion.

No argument there. Not having the cognitive ability to yet sustain oneself without manual labor, it was a given, I'd think.FatHobbit;1227260 wrote:They certainly were the fittest.

They were smart in their own way. Putting it that way people survive today with the stuff that is available the same as they did. I guess it just dumbfounds me how many people that would not have a clue how to survive if some big natural disaster did happen.O-Trap;1227259 wrote:What I meant was, the things you've just attributed to being "smart" (ie being able to survive) can be ascribed to our more Neanderthalic ancestors. I think it can be difficult at times to judge intelligence.
take Stephen Hawking for example, he arguably has the most brilliant mind on the planet yet he can't wipe his own ass or communicate without the aid of an electronic device.
If I didn't know what he looked like already, I would easily mistake him for a full blown retard.
rushing to judgement on someones skills based on a set of hard rules (GPA, survival skills, grammar, etc.) seems rather short sighted.
but the hard reality is sometimes people have to make a judgement call for various reasons and qualified, intelligent people can be overlooked.

I think a prime measure of dumbness is asking the OC to write an 8 page paper for you.

Fair enough. I think people look at "what we have" now the same way our ancestors might have looked at what they had then. If they were suddenly presented with a drought or famine, many of our ancestors probably would have died, because what they were used to relying on was taken.mcburg93;1227271 wrote:They were smart in their own way. Draw the parallel today, and people don't know how to function when the power goes out for 48-hours. It's because "power" is to us what a creek might have been to our ancestors: necessary to function.

Great post!
Also, I will rep you for bringing up Stephen Hawking.
I like that at least you can laugh about it. It was a bad idea to start that topic. LOL!ernest_t_bass;1227298 wrote:Lol. I was waiting for it. I deserve it.

I go by this, too, Belly, as my general "rule".
There are always exceptions to the rule. You and Einstein are perfect examples.WebFire;1227056 wrote:...but I generally think people who have bad grammar skills and very bad spelling ability are dumb.

When I hear, "I'm not book smart; I'm street smart," what I hear is "I'm not real smart; I'm pretend smart."
There are plenty of high GPA people lacking social skills and what-have-you, but I view GPA/IQ/basic intelligence as a necessary but not sufficient condition for success. Obviously, in some fields where the barrier to entry is low, it's a non-issue.
IQ scores track pretty well with what we consider "success," even if it's an imperfect correlation.

Some people do possess a large amount of street smarts, but the ones who actually use that line are usually full blown retards in all aspects of life... they aren't even pretend smart.fan_from_texas;1227375 wrote:When I hear, "I'm not book smart; I'm street smart," what I hear is "I'm not real smart; I'm pretend smart."
If they want to sound even dumber, they pull out the "I went to the school of hard knocks" card, which roughly translates to "I can't even count to potato".
