With camp starting and three 7 on 7's this week, lets talk football!
Coach Lee has made some changes to his staff, with the addition of Shaffer from the Haas regime. He was at Triway for a year under Haas, then left for Cloverleaf and is now back in purple. IMO, the titan defense just got a whole lot better..
Also, former head coach Jim Reynolds has been added to the staff! But now, at the junior high level? What a drop for a guy that once fired Lee from his own staff!
Talk schedule, PAC, come on guys!

Welcome to the OC, AllAmerican21! It'll be nice having another Triway person around. I had not heard about those staff additions. Thanks for the update. Reynolds was my coach in high school. He was great at getting players in the weight room. Let's see what contributors we return on both sides of the ball:

OFFENSE
QB: Parker Carmichael
RB: Kyle Schuler
WR/RB: Lane Drake
WR: Kyle Kearney
WR: Nathan Genet
WR: Justen Copley
WR: Luke Boreman
OL: Greg Hamlin

DEFENSE
LB/DL: Kyle Schuler
DB/LB: Kyle Kearney
DB: Luke Boreman
DB: Justen Copley
DB: Lane Drake

Some of our losses include:
WR Marcus Bertsch
RB Danny Fields
RB Abe Reynolds
Almost our whole OL and DL
LB/OL Zach Zody

Losing key players like that hurts, especially that many linemen. How are we looking in the trenches this season? I'm not familiar with who will be filling those spots.

The good things are that Parker will have a whole offseason knowing he's going to be the QB, and Lane a whole offseason knowing he's going to be a WR/RB (or is that up in the air?). On one hand, the competition will be slightly less (there's still Burkhart), but having a clearer ideas of their roles going in could help develop the offense. I'm excited for the 3 passing camps this week! Looks like our whole defensive backfield (other than Bertsch) will be back. Hopefully they are able to more than hold their own and maybe enable an extra player in the box every now and then.

Looking at our schedule:
8/24 vs West Holmes
8/31 @ Orrville
9/7 vs Waynedale
9/14 @ Fairless
9/21 vs Tuslaw
9/28 vs CVCA
10/5 @ Indian Valley
10/12 @ Manchester
10/19 vs Tusky Valley
10/16 vs Timken

Looks like we have 6 home games this year after having 6 away last year. Here are some initial thoughts on our schedule:
  • West Holmes will be a rough start out of the gate. It was a tough, frustrating game last year. We were right there but just couldn't get over the hump to make it a game. They return some key players. I'm glad we have them at home. If we can get a win there, it'd be a great way to start the season.
  • Then in week 2, we play the 1st game on Orrville's new turf field. They'll be motivated for that, but we should be, too!
  • Waynedale returns a few key players, but loses a lot to graduation from a team that shut us out last year at their place. Again, glad to have this game at home.
  • Fairless (2-8) knocked us off last year at our place. If there ever was a demoralizing loss, that was it. I'm sure Coach Lee and his staff will have the kids prepared and pumped for this one, but the kids shouldn't need any help doing that as many HS kids now consider Fairless one of our rivals.
  • Tuslaw's been so up and down recently, it's hard to tell what they're going to be like. I'll probably see them in 1 or 2 scrimmages this preseason, so maybe we'll get an idea then. Good numbers, but they seem to go in and out of offensive and defensive systems with very little consistency.
  • Glad we have CVCA at home. Gonna be a tough game.
  • Indian Valley could challenge for the PAC championship, IMO. They were really young last year but really surprised some people, and even made the playoffs.
  • Manchester as always will be Manchester. I'm not a fan of traveling to IV and Manchester in back-to-back weeks.
  • Returning home to play Tusky Valley (our first W last year) will be nice. We can't take them (or anyone) lightly, but hopefully this will be the start to a good homestand to finish the regular season.
  • Timken for our last game, hopefully we can finish the season right like we have the last few years.
I'm sure we'll know a LOT more once the passing camps and scrimmages come and go. Say, does anyone have our scrimmage schedule? All I have is our Northwestern scrimmage on August 11. Does anyone have the complete list?

7-on-7 Schedule:
Wed, Jul 18, 5PM: vs Hillsdale (home)
Thu, Jul 19, 5PM: vs Smithville (home)
Sat, Jul 21, 9AM: @ Bucyrus (30+ teams)
Wed, Jul 25, 10AM: @ Kent Roosevelt (vs Roosevelt, Garfield, and Northwestern)

Go Titans!

Lack of depth, size and experience on the O line will haunt Parker and Company this season. I don't know if Shaffer returning helps or hurts, there is a reason (and a whole lot of rumors) why Haas didn't take him to Wooster with him. But I do think that D needed some fresh ideas. Looks like the numbers should be about the same as last year, which still amazes me that more kids don't turn out for the program especially given its recent success.

I spoke with KK last week and he said that Triway will not scrimmage Wooster this year as they have in the past. I always thought that was the best scrimmage they had to prepare them for the season. I am not sure who pulled out of that agreement. Scrimmaging Northwestern is good especially since you see some different looks from them, and scrimmaging Dalton always makes you aware of what over all team speed can do to you, and I thought Wooster was a good fit in that mix because you had both size and speed on the same team.

Reynolds taking the middle school job isn't necessarily a bad thing, I like developing kids into a consistent system starting at that age, and I believe that is one thing that has been lacking in the past. (the jv team doesn't run the same offense as the varsity). Maybe Reynolds wanted to coach at that level and it requires a little less time and allows him to scout the upcoming opponents, I see him at that level as a good thing.

There are no breaks in the schedule this year, the kid have to stay focused to put together a winning season. Hopefully they can make another play off run this year. I think that would be good for the program.

I agree. That is a bummer.

More than likely Schuler will get moved to the O Line, like he did last year. Horner will be the other lineman with some (limited) experience at the varsity level. I know the new sophomore class is supposidly loaded with talent and numbers, look for some of those kids get some Friday Night experience this season. Might have to let some of those kids take their lumps this season and prepare for the 2013 campaign.

it looks like schuler and horner will be the leaders up front, haven't heard much else about that.. maybe one of you guys can make it to a 7on7 and see who gets reps as i think the line will be working out at the same time..
also heard that haas pulled out of the triway scrimmage soon after accepting the job at wooster..
i think shaffer is a good addition to the program, very smart guy and can maybe bring some fresh ideas to that side of the ball

Without a doubt Parker is the starting qb.

The linemen work out at the 7 on 7 will answer no questions. They run through drills and hit some words no revelations there.

So Schuler, Horner, and Hamlin get the starting nods on the O line. Two spots to fill, maybe Ickes fills one spot and Cleveland fills the other, but that leads me to believe you need to keep two backs in the backfield because the blitz will be coming with a vengeance.

Shaffer is a good addition to the staff. But how much do he and Fletcher clash on philosophy?

I am tied up with work and will probably not make any of the 7 on 7's this week, I am hoping to catch a scrimmage or two. I believe Haas is looking to "schedule up" and scrimmaging two D4 teams doesn't benefit his program.

I'll be at all three 7-on-7s this week, so I can give a rundown of how the offense looks and who's doing what. Maybe during some off time sometime this week I can stroll over and see what the linemen are doing (normally at Bucyrus there's a chance to go over and watch the tug of war event). I'm interested in seeing how big we're going to be - I'm thinking not very. :(

These are just 7-on-7s, though. So much can change. Last year in the passing camps Copley was a big contributor on offense but only had 5 catches during the season (2 for TDs). He's so athletic, it'd be great to see him be able to produce a little more this year. But if having him sit while on O gives him a rest for defense (2nd in interceptions, 3rd in pass deflections, 1st in fumble recovers w/ 1), I guess I'm OK with it. It's just tough for a school our size and with our numbers (35) to find the athletes to go around w/o having 6-7 two-way starters. I'm sure we'll be close to that this year.

I agree that Haas pulling out of the scrimmage is more about competition (scheduling up) than anything else people might think, like animosity or whatever. I just saw Haas and his wife at the Shreve Homecoming this past weekend. Haha.

I'm looking forward to how our kids have worked in the offseason to get bigger, faster, stronger. According to last year's numbers, we only have 4 roster players returning that were over 185 pounds. Wow. (these are the numbers I was given to put into MaxPreps, so they may not match the program exactly)

1 Alex Collins OL, DB Jr. 5-6 140
11 Lane Drake QB, DB Jr. 5-10 160
16 Daniel Burkhart QB, DB Jr. 5-7 165
22 Kyle Kearney WR, DB Jr. 6-5 195
45 Jacob Myers RB, DE Jr. 5-10 175
51 Brody Horner OL, DT Jr. 6-0 205
87 Nathan Genet WR, DB Jr. 5-7 140
57 Matt Armstrong OL, DE Jr. 6-0 170
59 Josh Shank OL, DE Jr. 6-0 185
52 Greg Hamlin OL, DE, OLB Jr. 5-7 165
36 Luke Boreman WR, DB Jr. 5-7 165
31 Kyle Schuler RB, OLB, DT Jr. 5-8 205
14 Kyle Nudd WR, DB Jr. 6-0 140
7 Justen Copley WR, DB Jr. 5-8 155
13 Mason Hart WR, DB So. 5-10 140
61 Zach Hart OL, DE So. 5-5 140
63 Bryce Ickes OL, DT So. 5-6 195
53 Alex Evans OL, DT So. 5-8 180
50 Cal Huffman OL, LB So. 5-6 155
44 Will Fowler WR, DB So. 5-7 140
30 Isaac Myers-Koglman WR, DB So. 5-8 145
19 Dakota Kiner WR, RB, DB So. 5-5 135
12 Parker Carmichael QB Fr. 5-10 160

Wow I think we have more size in d-town and that's not exactly what we're known for!

Size is definitely not something we will have this year but will be quick up front from what I can tell.. that line (with hamlin, ickes and evans) could be decent, need to stay healthy because I think the drop after that might be a little steep

Parker needs to working on the quick release after a 3 step drop, that may be all he has time wise.

He got pummeled all last year, too. Really felt bad for him.

Yes he did. I guess what I was trying to say was I hope the offense makes some adaptations based on the line. Not going to have time to stand in the pocket and wait for recievers to get open downfield.

Agree. I hope we look REALLY good in the 7-on-7's, 'cuz it only gets harder when you add pads and linemen. By the way, weather tonight is supposed to be really bad. Any word on if the passing camp is still on?

Here's my summary: (will try to get a simple video up tonight)
http://www.pitmanstats.com/2012/07/21/area-teams-represent-at-bucyrus-7-on-7/

Our only two losses Saturday (one on a last second TD and the other in 5 OT) were to the tournament runner-up and tournament champion, respectively.

Pit...

If you had to make a prediction today on Triways record this season...

What would it be?

note: question not designed to be used to bust your chops later on, just looking for an early, early season take.

I'll have to wait and see. I am not very familiar with some of our linemen, and that will be a big factor in our success this year, IMO, both offensively and defensively. I look forward to the scrimmages to see how we do. (Check your PMs)
