I haven't had a chance to listen to either of them yet, and I realize some of you absolutely despise Lil Wayne, but I know some people will be interested in these:

Believe it or not ccrunner, Lil Wayne is one of the most popular artists of the decade. I don't necessarily like with it -- Scratch that, I don't like it at all -- but I can almost guarantee right now that it'll be the top-selling album of 2010.

I'm not even a fan of hardcore rap, but I really like Lil Wayne. Not enough to buy his CD, but enough that I'll listen to his free stuff.

People that don't like Lil Wayne are funny. If it's because you just don't like the genre he falls into then GTFO, why would you even post here? But people that talk shit on him make me laugh.

Mainstream? Absolutely. But if you know where to look there's still some hope. The Blakroc project turned out amazing, Lupe and Dro put out pretty good mixtapes, Wale isn't doing too bad, Drake will be okay if he can get back some creativity and break away from his label, Clipse is still going strong with their new album, and I'm just dying for J-Cole to put something of his own out. Sure, this isn't College Dropout and Blueprint quality stuff, but the industry will get through it and someone will step up. And if not, R&B is making a surge like no other. Seriously, it's been phenomenal this year.

How quickly the world forgets about Soulja Boy.

By himself he set rap back about 50 years.

I was watching a special on vh1 last weekend about old school rap. With like Kool Mo Dee, Krs1, Digital Underground. Man that was some good stuff. There are still some good rappers out there today but I agree it's very very watered down.

Yeah, the Young Money record definitely sucks.

I just took it all in. People that are blown away by non-complex punchlines over really, really bad production are going to eat it up.

But, it's not really what mainstream hip hop needs. Drake and Millz get gold stars, but there's not enough of them (Which begs....why would you not put the two best rappers in your crew on damn near every track??? SMH)

And, for me, Nicki Minaj is just terrible. Just awful...like, I don't see the appeal in the least.

The highlight of the record isn't even a song, it's probably a verse. Drake's verse in "Fuck The Bulls" is indicative of how far ahead of the rest of them he is.

Because they want to get as many names as possible--more people they can make big the more money they make. There is some serious talent in Young Money, I agree that not all of them are good but you can't be surprised. Look what Cash Money did--Lil Wayne learned from some of the best. MAXIMIZE profits--they don't give a shit what they're doing to "main stream" hip hop. Why do you think Lil Wayne still even wastes time doing mix tapes and shit? Because that's the stuff that isn't mainstream and it's amazing--the best stuff Lil Wayne does never makes it to the radio and that's from any album. There is too much money to be made to not sell out and get some tracks on the radio.

One thing I cannot understand about rap/hip-hop..

The use of the N word.

Well, to be honest, as a fan, and/or critic, I'm not interested in money. It's not about maximizing profits for me, the listener. It's about the quality of music.

And Cash Money was very different, in the sense that they all had a role within that group...the basic response with Young Money (at least early), is that it's Drake, and a ton of Wayne clones, which I'm hard pressed to disagree with.

And, truthfully, if the production was better, I'd probably be a bit warmer to it, but the production is even bad. And to further it, songs like "Bedrock" are just completely juvenile rap, pretty much a 1/2 step up from Soulja Boy.

If they don't care about the damage they're doing to the genre, then get out of the genre. But, to be fair, they're likely unaware. I look at Drake, mostly, in this case, and I just feel like he would be so much better for rap outside of the YM machine.

But, sure, if it's all about making money and nothing else, then ummmm....sure. They're winners, they're going to be pretty rich. But, weren't you griping about KISS?

Just a thought.

I know that, as a fan. But you can't expect it to be different--you'd be missing out on a lot of great music if it weren't for the guys on the top pushing the envelope and showing everyone how much money people can make in the industry.

I wasn't griping about Kiss at all--just stating the facts. Their music wasn't that great, they just knew how to market themselves and sell it. I'm not saying I like all the music coming from Young Money--I'm pretty much in agreement with you about them, but the reason for it is pretty clear IMO.

Rebirth is complete trash. The only good track is "Drop the World" feat Eminem. Em completely rips the track. His verse is insane. He is truly the one rapper who, when he tried and cares, can produce rhymes and flows that no one else can touch.
