Most memorable my 21[SUP]st[/SUP] I was wounded 4 weeks earlier had already 2 operations and was on my way back to the State (Walter Reed) land on the 8[SUP]th[/SUP] got enrolled into Walther Reed. I was weak and still in some pain and half of my face was wrapped. I told the Officer that my birthday was the 11[SUP]th[/SUP] and I will be going home to see my mom and family as a surprise, they still think I’m in Japan. He said that was not going to happen, I don’t think he understood I don’t follow rules very good and don’t get in my way now. The morning of the 9[SUP]th[/SUP] I made a phone call to my Congressmen. I explain to this lady that I was going home some way. I had no uniform or money but some way I will be home, plus if I leave Walter Reed I would be AWOL and I don’t care. The morning of the 10[SUP]th[/SUP] I was given 2 week orders to go home w/ back pay and given a uniform and honors. I got a flight to Canton/Akron stand-by that night arrived at 10:30. I walked out of the airport and cried in the parking lot. I was home, everything hit me and I couldn’t believe that I was home. A man and his wife ask me if I was OK I just stared at then .. Then he said do you want a ride home. Can you just take me to the end of my street I want to walk home.. I arrived at home just before midnight on the 10[SUP]th[/SUP] … seeing my mom was my greatest gift.
Pretty cool, Belly. Was going to make some jokes on your spelling, then I got to the end of your story. THanks for sharing.
