Looks like there was some trouble at Palmerfest in Athens. Cops ended it early this year to get to a house fire. I went to OU and when I went there Palmerfest was always a great weekend. The worst year was my freshmen year when the cops had bottles thrown at them while breaking up the party. I know that when I was there the trouble never started until the cops tried to stop the partying. At that time the cops would always get overzealous and start breaking items in the students homes which always led to the fighting with police.

The best weekends in Athens are in order:

Homecoming
Moms Weekend
Any Weekend Spring
Halloween

Right, it's the cops fault that trouble started; not the drunk, young, dumb fuccking idiots. I'm sure the cops just show up when no trouble is present and then all of a sudden trouble ensues. The cops probably should have just let the house fire continue instead of intervening. Good post!

I get the allure of OU and I've had my share of good times but these days why would you want to go to a party to get maced or arrested? I'd rather hang somewhere else and drink my PBR and smoke my hippy lettuce.

Halloween is overrated there only because Halloween is generally awesome at most schools, but the Spring fests were always fun to visit. Never had any bad experiences with the cops there

33 towards Athens from Columbus is a bust in itself these days.

Obviously shutting it down was a good idea so they could get to a house fire, but you really can't "blame" the students (or visitors) yet until they officially determine what started the fire (there are only rumors til the inspectors get in there). If it ends up being electrical, which is entirely possible since it appears to have started in a basement, then it's just circumstantial, as all reports were that it was tame up to that point.

Now, if the fire was deliberately set, obviously they deserve everything that comes their way.

The Mayor only declared a riot to get the fire trucks through, not because of an actual riot.

Hey dwc where did I say the cops shouldn't have ended this years party early. I said it past years when I went there the cops ended it and created more chaos then letting it die down on it's own. The cops actually do show up when no trouble is present. They arrive on horseback and station themselves at the end of the streets before the parties even start. From the times the block party starts to the moment before the cops decide to end the party I only saw maybe a handful of underage arrests ( normal for any campus) The trouble always starts when the cops end the block party with no warning and just start barrelling down the street on horseback. There were also very few arrests this year because the students knew there was a house fire and got out of the area as quick as possible. There were no reports of injury from the fire Or the removal of students from the street.

I do agree with Sportschampps. When I was at OU, my friends lived on Palmer for two years. Senior year PalmerFest BEGAN with them busting two parties (the far houses at each end of the street) and then basically doing nothing but setting upon the street to "make their presence". Just basically a dick move so they could say they reached their weekend quota. If they really cared about preserving the world from underage drinkers and upholding the law and all that bullshit, they could have gone down the street, shutting everyone down in the early afternoon. Instead, they just opened the day with a "show of power" and then relaxed, apparently happy they'd gotten the chance to bust some people without having to sit around and wait too long or anything like that.

right, because going down the street shutting down parties would have ended well.

I saw the (former?) editor of The Post put that in his Dispatch article, but AFD is still saying it's suspicious and that most accidental scenarios have been ruled out.

I ask again, when the cops come in to shut it down, who is at fault? The cops doing their job or the young, drunk idiots who more than likely start trouble when the cops do come into the area. The cops should just let it go on and on and let it die out on its own? That normally doesn't end well.

It's also the only one that causes problems between the students and the police.

I was in a house one year on Palmer when a student was playing fuck the police on his stero out the windows into his yard and a cop came into the house took the stero and smashed it and arrested the student for inciting a riot. until the cop smashed the stero from the 2nd floor window to the sidewalk below there was no riot. Once this happened though the students argued with the cop that what he did was wrong and actually caused a near riot. Btw the student was found innocent and sued the city.

While most of the cops in Athens are wonderful and look out for the students and locals well being there are a few overzealous corrupt cops in leadership positions.

State Fire Marshall ruled the fire arson, saying someone went in the basement and deliberately set it. NOW we can definitely say shit is getting out of hand.

And the kid's plan worked. He was instigating a confrontation with the police. I'm guessing you are young, maybe 25 at the oldest. I remember in college always seeing kids want to agitate police when there were big numbers of people partying.

You stated it yourself, Palmer fest is the largest and most popular party in Athens. When people are partying in large numbers, trouble follows. Look at this year as an example, someone started a fire. It may not have been a student, but it was a party-goer. Had the cops not come in and shut it down, bigger problems could have had happen this year and the same goes for any other year.

I don't disagree with you that some cops can be overzealous, however, when dealing with a bunch of drunk, young punks; I'm sure the patience wears thin on the good cops too.
