[LEFT]OK, why do the Simpsons live in a town called Springfield? Isn’t that a little generic?
Springfield was named after Springfield, Oregon. The only reason is that when I was a kid, the TV show “Father Knows Best” took place in the town of Springfield, and I was thrilled because I imagined that it was the town next to Portland, my hometown. When I grew up, I realized it was just a fictitious name. I also figured out that Springfield was one of the most common names for a city in the U.S. In anticipation of the success of the show, I thought, “This will be cool; everyone will think it’s their Springfield.” And they do.

I no longer care about the Simpsons. They were past their prime after the 9th/10th season, and the show is straight garbage now.

Honestly, that's what I call a cool story bro. Such a riveting tale, I honestly copy and pasted it to word, saved on my hard drive, backed it up on a jump drive, drove to the bank, put the jump drive in the safe deposit box, and will leave it there until my kids turn about 12 (when they can actually state their age, and ask what it is I'm showing them), when I will pick it up, put it in an old USB drive reader and relay this cool story to them and tell them, "kids, this is what a cool story should look and sound like...not like the stories your generation tells."

That story didn't reveal the location of Springfield. All it did was reveal the origins of it. He named the Simpsons' hometown after Springfield, OR. They are in fact not located in Springfield, OR.

The consensus on the internet is that the Simpsons went to hell after the second episode of the ninth season, The Principal and the Pauper in which Principal Skinner is revealed to be an imposter. At the end of the episode, the audience is basically told that the events of this episode should be forgotten.

Matt Groening called the episode a mistake and one of the worst episodes on the Season 9 DVD set introduction (I actually have listened to the commentaries as well.)

I'm not saying that every episode after that specific episode was garbage, but it ended the week after week of solid episodes that occurred from season 3(or 4) until season 8.

This. Because we all know that the states of Ohio, Maine, Nevada, and Kentucky border the state Springfield is in.
