So, I've recently been tossing around the idea of living in my camper during the summer months(Apr-Oct). Basically, this would allow me to save money to build the home I want in a few years. It's on a permanent spot at a very nice place. Rent w/ utilities would cost me right about $300/mo. I currently pay $350 for rent, and utilities cost me another $300 where I'm currently at. The drive is an extra 15-20 minutes each way to work from the campground, which would cost me about $60/mo above what I'm paying now in gas. My parents and brother have both offered me a bedroom during the winter months(Nov-Mar) for $100/mo. The big hang up is living w/ my parents or my brothers family for 5 mo. I'm not sure I can handle it. I do pay $200/mo for my loan on the camper, but that would be the same no matter where I lived. So, would you do it to save roughly $4500/yr??

Does the camper cost more to insure every year than renter's insurance?

I'm not sure your math makes sense. Even assuming it does, $200/mo for the camper financing PLUS depreciation would seem to point to the obvious choice of, DUH, sell the camper. (or, if it's underwater....burn it).
$300 for utilities in your apartment? That makes no sense. For something of that size I would think about $80 a month. If you're talking cable and internet, then if you do without in the camper you can do without in the apartment.

I guess if you throw in: water, gas heat, electric, and trash, it could run it up. Now, it could even be more IF the heat is not gas and is electric. Electric heat can get expensive depending on the size of the house AND how hot it's kept in the house.

I'm not going to sell it. I'm not in a situation where I can't afford it, I was just thinking I could save even more money by living in it. Moreso just me being greedy. I live in an older mobile home, that is all electric. Electric bill can run anywhere from $150-$250. Also in the utilities is trash, water, cable, and internet. At the campground, I wouldn't pay anything for trash or water. I can get internet for about $25/mo., and I would get Direct TV. I'm confused by your logic. You live in a mobile home that costs $300/mo in utilities alone, but you can afford a camper? You have $850 outgoing monthly in rent, utilities, camper loan.

I see what you're saying. Here's the thing though, I was just looking at it as an option to save money, not as something I need to do to survive. I'm not interested in selling the camper, as that's what I like to spend my free time doing in the summer. If I was struggling to survive, then yea, I'd sell the camper, no questions asked. Looks like a fairly nice camp ground. I assume the permanent residents at the camp ground are in a separate area from the weekend renters?
I'd consider checking out the place on a busy weekend before moving there. May find out the permanent residents are loud and obnoxious.

If your options are to live in a trailer or live in a different trailer for $300 less a month, it doesn't seem like a hard decision.se-alum;1141159 wrote:.
