Pitt has to be it, because they have the most research $ of any of the universities mentioned and the big 10 is all about research.

The school that is the most mutually beneficial across the board is Rutgers. Rutgers is solid academically and a nice market while at the same time isn't going to change the balance of power in major sports. For Rutgers, it is an upgrade and they are only moderately competitive in the major sports anyway.
I think the market is the most important thing for the Big Ten is the market and this goes back to the establishment of the Big Ten network.
Syracuse is right up there and while I intially thought they may not be interested primarily based on their basketball affiliation, I remembered they were ready to bolt to the ACC until the state of Virginia effectively blocked that.

I understand the academics of most Big 10 schools, but why are academics even a factor when discussing whether a team is a good fit for an athletic conference?

ideally, i would want notre dame to join, although, i am probably in the minority as an irish fan
however, the thought of michigan and notre dame turning things around, potentially competing with ohio state for big ten titles, and bringing midwestern football back to prominence is very enticing...
it would be the best step forward towards shutting up the sec

If we take a Big East team, the Big East would have to quickly find a replacement because you have to have at least 8 teams to be a BCS conference.
Who do you think they would add? I'd guess it would pretty much have to be another C-USA team

since the Big East is mainly a basketball conference, Memphis would be a decent choice (if which ever BE school that goes to the B10 moves to the B10 in all sports)

I wonder if the Big East loses a football team if it wouldn't have another big domino effect. For example, while they're expanding, maybe they want to get to 12 members and have a championship game. Aside from the already-mentioned ECU, you have UCF and Marshall who would both be walking into nice geographic rivalries. (I know WVU has never been keen on even playing Marshall, but I'm wondering if that climate may be changing when they're talking about trying to keep up with the rest of the BCS conferences).

If it is mizzou, I would hope that the big 12 would subsequently invite tcu. That would solve one of the mid-major problems.

Mizzou has been serious about the B10 for some time, I guess something in the B12 upsets them.

The big east wouldn't expand to 12, more like 9 so they can have a balanced conference schedule with 4 home and away compared to the current setup where it's 4-3 alternating every year between having more home or away games.
