There is about a one-minute gap during which police say they're not sure what happened.

Zimmerman told them he lost sight of Trayvon and was walking back to his SUV when Trayvon approached him from the left rear, and they exchanged words.
Trayvon asked Zimmerman if he had a problem. Zimmerman said no and reached for his cell phone, he told police. Trayvon then said, "Well, you do now" or something similar and punched Zimmerman in the nose, according to the account he gave police.

Zimmerman fell to the ground and Trayvon got on top of him and began slamming his head into the sidewalk, he told police.

Zimmerman began yelling for help.

One witness, who has since talked to local television news reporters, told police he saw Zimmerman ("the guy in the red") on the ground with Trayvon("the guy in the hoodie") on top, pounding him — and was unequivocal that it was Zimmerman who was crying for help.

Zimmerman then shot Trayvon once in the chest at very close range, according to authorities.

When police arrived less than two minutes later, Zimmerman was bleeding from the nose, had a swollen lip and had bloody lacerations to the back of his head.

Orlando Sentinel

Trayvon was 6'3", Zimmerman is 5'9" and in the dark probably had no idea how old Trayvon was or if he was armed.

I still think he should have been charged w/ manslaughter because he pursued the suspicious person and should have waited for police.

If he didn't know if he was armed or not why did the idiot get out of the car in the first place?

And you're bringing about a double standard. you expect a 17 year old to go and tell his parents, but the adult is allowed to follow him, and when he gets "attacked" is allowed to pull out a gun and shoot? He should have called the police after the attack, not shoot the kid.

If somebody punches me, I'm not going to shoot them. I'll fight back.
so when you were 17, you would confront an unknown man twice your size? and you are assuming you can fight back, what if he gets the jump on you and cold cocks you? lots of people have died from simply getting punched.

So, the police arrived MINUTES after the initial 911 call. Is "minutes" really long enough to get into a full blown altercation? You also have a neighbor claiming she didn't hear any altercation, but heard somebody whimpering and crying right before the shot was fired.

So, sounds like Martin was pleading for his life to me.
minutes are plenty of time for an altercation. why you assume it was Martin's voice?

speedofsand stated that Martin was 6"3 while Zimmerman was 5"9. Zimmerman was just wider.

This probably belongs on the political forum, but why does the NYT and other media outlets refer to Zimmerman as a "white hispanic"? I've never seen that term used before.

Do you normally see that in newspapers? Why start now? Obviously some people of latin-American descent are darker (or lighter) than others. I have never read the term White Hispanic in any AP article before. Have you?

No I haven't but trust me it is used in a lot of job applications. I have also seen it used in other articles outside of the AP.

We all know why.

And - yes - this should be in the political forum.

If that's what you think the reason is so be it.

Educate yourself a little bit. It's more of case of something that the people in power at the time created to classify people and now it's coming back in an ugly way.

I'm educated and I read. A lot. I read the Economist. I read the Wall Street Journal (U.S. and Asia). I read The Atlantic. I read USA Today (Asia only). I read the NYT (non-U.S edition, they are having funding issues so they can't always provide a full regional edition).

I've never read this term in in any of those media outlets. I could be wrong, but a google search tells me I'm not.

So why did the NYT all of a sudden start calling Mr. Zimmerman a "white" Hispanic?

Bingo. Creating news. If that guy is "white" I'm a Chinese fighter pilot. If he's white Barack Obama is white.

This has Duke lacrosse written all over it.

How absurd. I guess you're going for shock value as well. Duke Lacrosse? What a rational comparison. The reason why they used it is pretty much for the same reasons you brought up Duke Lacrosse. For sensationalism. It seems as if you've drank their kool aid. My point is if the term had never been made it would not be used as it is today. If you don't want to read and understand why the term was made then so be it. Good luck with the whole race wars thing as well lol.

Where have you seen it used besides "wikipedia". Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the site, it is good for links and general info.

Where have you seen this term used before?

I'm waiting.

Still waiting chief. Where has Reuters, AP, or NYT ever used that term before? And why now?

That's another article that doesn't mention it.

my dude is a defense attorney on orlando and he just got kicked the case of the HOA from this case. He also got the case of the bus driver from the FAMU band hazing case. pretty interesting stuff thinking about it from a defense standpoint in both cases.

Why cause people are jumping to conclusions without fully hearing all the details? It's exactly what happened in the Duke lacrosse case.
