Lots of people say things to get elected, and then act differently. That's why politicians have a reputation as liars. Santorum definitely fits the bill, IMO. He's conservative, but he's really cranked it up to appeal to the far right as his only chance to get the nomination. Pelosi, on the other hand, is every bit as bat-sheet crazy as she portrays - no "act" there.
I don't like Santorum's overuse of hyperbole and exaggeration, but that is, again, typical of many politicians. He's being ragged on for his over-the-top use of hyperbole, but he's not stupid and these aren't invalid positions, most people just don't care for social conservative views, or don't want it forced on them.
His comment about plants not minding CO2 was on the mark. A little too laissez-faire for my liking, but a fairly succinct commentary on the incompleteness of the research and the use of fear to push a costly green agenda. Most of us don't want politicians telling us what we do in the bedroom or watch on tv/internet, but his views on porn are not misaligned with many Christians and there is valid research that he's cited. It is a nanny-state view, but it's not a stupid or indefensible one. His comments on education, again, probably don't sufficiently find their mark but it's also true that there are a number of people who get buried under a mountain of debt that either aren't college material or pursue a useless major - and many of those would be better served with a trade school or technical degree. It's politically incorrect to say so, but it IS harmful to push some of these kids toward college when better paths to a better life are available to them.
I don't like Santorum. His views, at least in these 1-2 sentence soundbites, are overly simplistic and too black & white. Too dismissive. And I hate the use of such hyperbole in politics in general. But there's a fair amount of pragmatism in his comments that are being completely ignored and pushed aside in the attacks on him,
