Damn, man. Sorry to hear that. What is the job market like for your field in your general area? Hopefully you can bounce back and find another job soon.

Can't imagine you're losing too much income since you only worked 2 days a week.

I worked 12 hours saturday, sunday, and mondays. Then did construction on the side for the rest of the week.
I just got the weekend shift a month ago and been loving the extra time to work on the side. The guy that replaced me on my shift during the week lost his job also.

Shitty news. But maybe there is a bright side to it, as you mentioned additional free time to improve your marketibility in the job search. Good luck.

Your side construction jobs probably won't factor into the consideration of your unemployment benefit (if you are a 1099 contract employee, they aren't paying unemployment tax on you, so no benefit and certainly no benefit if you're paid under the table). However, your benefit will be offset, even eliminated, with what you make in such side jobs. That is, unless you attempt to cheat the system by getting paid under the table. I wouldn't recommend that.

It's a weekly calculation though. You can apply for unemployment, and in weeks you find no work you'll collect the full benefit. But if your benefit was, say, $250 a week and you make $300 that week for a few days of construction then you would not receive a benefit that week.

I am located in central ohio. I thought about the casino was looking into it awhile back. I should be good will find something soon. Just the way they went about it a letter really pissed me off. I would understand if I saw it coming but had no clue. The other guy that got fired is pretty pissed he just got hired a few months ago.

Yea I already let the unemployment know about it. They explained it to me pretty well. I was not really looking at the money from them as much as being able to use some state money to get my certifications. The lady I talked to on the phone told me it would be a good idea to get them cause the state would pay for partial or all of the classes.

For those of who dont understand, I believe the mcburg used to work as a "weekend warrior". Longer hours, less days, probably a little higher pay than the week day people get as well.

Definitely. But keep filing every week since it's still your money in weeks where you might not find work (or perhaps don't "look as hard" due to other commitments). Really unemployment isn't enough incentive for most people to sit on their ass, it's when you add-in food stamps and other welfare that sitting on one's ass becomes preferable to working 40hrs to make marginally more, if that, money.

Not sure what your cert programs will require as far as time. I don't believe full-time students are eligible to collect unemployment (hence the money for job-training and so forth). Also keep in mind that any job improvement-related expenses not fully covered or reimbursed by a govt program can be tax deductible.

Best of luck to you.

Thanks gut. Im gonna get my hvac cert and electric cert already have my plumbers license so shouldnt have to many problems getting the others. Also shouldnt have to much problem getting another job. Just from talking to the lady on the phone she explained now is the time to get them cause of all the government programs. As much as I hate using them I think its time too.

There's no shame. You damn well better be able to benefit from the programs your taxes [partially] fund when you qualify.
