As well as Memphis over the Spurs 2 seasons ago. Also weren't the 1999 finals NY Knicks an 8 seed?

Eight seeds have advanced past the first round five times in the NBA:

94 Nuggets
99 Knicks
07 Warriors
11 Grizzlies
12 76ers

Since switching in 1994 to a new alignment, there have been 10 eight seeds to advance in the NHL:

94 Sharks
95 Rangers
98 Senators
99 Penguins
00 Sharks
02 Canadiens
06 Oilers
09 Ducks
10 Canadiens

Take it further. How many NBA Teams have made it past more than 1 round? I think only the Knicks. I think a few NHL teams have made it pretty far (though, admittedly, I may be thinking of 7 seeds, as I know a few of them have advanced pretty far as well).

I like how it is with 12 but every year there are weak playoff teams....but in recent history some of those teams that JUST sneak in have won it all.

This year in the AFC the Steelers are the #6 right now....but they haven't earned a playoff bid....Bengals? Jets? Breowns? As of now there are only 5 AFC teams worthy of the playoffs....and of course any one of those 4 teams would take the #6

It was the first time anyone seeded lower than 5 won though.

Yes, but that was a strike-shortened season. I think they finish a little higher than 8th in the East if that would have been an 82-game season.

NFL Considering Expansion Of Playoffs

Dec 12, 2012 7:14 PM EST
The NFL is considering expanding the playoffs from its current number of 12.
"Right now we're with 12 teams obviously. We'll look at probably 14 or 16 teams," Goodell said.
A 16-team playoff would mean half of the teams in the NFL would qualify for the playoffs, making the regular season less meaningful.

When they expand the playoffs to 32 teams the BROWNS will be in the playoffs.

I don't have a favorite NFL team. Its all just business at that level. But I do watch a lot for entertainment. When I was a kid, the Bengals were my team.

Huh? Really? We have three right now in Stern, Selig and Bettman.

Some of you guys are way too harsh on Goodell. The NFL is bigger than it has ever been, and he has been putting an end to the criminal image it had. He is far from a fuck head. Player safety is not a simple issue to deal with.

I forgot about Bettman. He's gotta be the most hated at the moment.

Have you ever heard a player praise Goodell? I just think he's too inconsistent and even the notion of getting rid of KOs is ridiculous.

I'm with like that...a commissioner is going to make bad moves, it'd be impossible not to. I genuinely feel like goodell does care about his players. I hate when people say he's only making business moves. No shit! His players share in the revenue so idk what they're complaining about. Its not an easy task what he's in charge of doing.

Media driven with the players. I doubt the media is going to report a player praising Goodell, and the whole lockout obviously created tension. It's impossible to be liked by everyone, especially dealing with a lockout. Most of the players QQing are QQing, because they can't get away with the shit they did in the past.

Wow, when you see it in print, amazing the Stern (I hate the NBA) is by far the best commissioner. Selig and Bettman make Goodell look adequate.

Bettman makes anything look adequate. What a huge failure that guy is.

Goodell could make the league into flag football and I still don't think he'd be worse then Bettman
