I don't think Brad Stevens needs a steppingstone job. The guy can probably put his name in at any of the bluebloods and, assuming one of those schools doesn't have a "family member" in the hunt, probably get serious consideration. One Final Four might be a fluke (Smart). Two national championship games is a boss and the sign of an elite head coach (as in top 10 to 15 in the game).

As Laley has said here many times, Stevens is probably waiting for one of the giants.

Smart might. Stevens, imo, no way. He can be as selective as he wants, and I doubt he chooses Illinois. In fact, I doubt he chooses any Big Ten school other than IU, cause I dont think he wants to close that door...ever.

I would bet that Brad Stevens will continue to build Butler and if/when a top 10 job opens up he will take it. He has proven he can coach and win and win in the tourney with Butler. If he jumps ship, I have a hunch it will be at a school that makes all that easier (ie, the top 10 teams in the country and top schools in a conference).

Laley, you think Stevens would take the UCLA job? As a state of Indiana guy who seems to like that traditional sort of environment at Butler, I'm not so sure LA would be the best of fits. But that's purely conjecture on my part.

This might be a really good fit. It'd be interesting.

No, maybe the only blueblood I see him turning down. Duke/UNC/Kansas/Indiana/Kentucky/Syracuse/UCONN/Georgetown

Those are the teams I could see him going for. UCONN and GT mostly because they should rise immediately to the top of the Big East with Syracuse gone.

I think you're right. If Stevens is going to the Big East, however, like Sports, I think it will be to UConn. Unless you've heard something I have not, I don't see Georgetown parting ways with John Thompson III for awhile. This could obviously change if Big John's son starts to lose control of the program, but, despite one really down year (16-15 in '09) and a bad upset loss to Ohio in the NCAAs, he's taken the Hoyas to levels of winning they had not seen since Alonzo Mourning. A Final Four, annual top 10 and 15 rankings and is a legacy in Landover.

I didnt mention those schools based on openings, just on if he would take them.

Indiana, GT, Kansas and UK (if Cal doesnt leave like he says he might) all appear to have coaches for at least another decade, probably closer to two.

I think you can add Duke to the group of schools who will have their coach for another decade. Personally, I don't see K going anywhere for a very long while. He's 65 now, so part of me is simply wishful. But from things I've heard K state about his health and vibrancy for the game, it makes me think he's got another 10 years in him. Lute Olson was forced out of Arizona at about 73, and probably would have coached a few years longer had personal stuff not muffed everything up in Tucson, so it's certainly not out of the question.

I think Stevens leaves Butler for a blueblood before Duke's job is open. I'd love the guy, though. He's great.
