Any predictions for the upcoming season?

Checking in...not sure I've ever replied to a baseball thread.

Hope the team can have some success this year. If the "youth" stuff comes out after the 1st or 2nd game, I know it will be another long season.

If you're young two years ago, you shouldn't be young this year. If you are, it means kids aren't coming out for baseball...and that's not a good thing.

This thread gets less than 100 legitimate posts, and Wooster wins the OCC again this year.

It's time for the Red Rider Baseball program to turn things around. They have a talented sophomore class that should see a lot of playing time, along with several jrs & seniors. A lot of Orrville's talent goes out for track. We should be at least .500 this year and yes Wooster will probably win the OCC.

There is no doubt that this years Orrville's team has talent. But "on paper" and "on field" can be two different things. I think we compete in the OCC much better this season than in years past.

High school baseball is all about pitching. If you have a couple of kids that can control the game from the mound, you will be fine. Giving up walks and not hitting spots will equate to lots of losses!

ringz, they will be lucky to get 25 posts, baseball is a non-factor in Orrville. Sad to say but true, until recently we probably sent more kids to college playing baseball than anyother sport. We have 2-3 good players year in and year out but you have to trott out 9 guys in this sport.

I didn't realize that more kids went onto college to play baseball at Orrville than any other sport. Can you list the kids that play or played baseball in college over the last 25 years?

Old rider and red rider might be able to give you a better answer going back that far. But in the last 10 years or so , you would have Grimms,i think a Pertee, mayber Old rider played for awhile, Smith, 3 Samsons, Johnson, this year I believe Perez and youngest Samson will be playing somewhere next year. there are others but can't remember names.

Orrville will be good AND young (but not necessarily inexperienced) ... I think the Riders will be in the OCC chase.

Coach Marshall invested a lot in youth programs, I'd expect(hope) to see some payoff in that.

The formula for a successful program/ season is pretty simple.

1) A coach who cares and is willing to put his own time in making sure his players are getting their work in during the summer.

2 ) a feeder program that breeds success and winning and puts young players against tough competition.

3) dedicated players and parents who put in the time and effort to raise the level of the players game outside of the high school season.

If your players are picking up their gloves in February and putting them down in June, you can't expect to have a very good team.

The College of Wooster has seen Matt Rodgers, Mitch Pertee, Haley, and Ryan Mcallister, 3 Samsons, and Johnson. Joe Seifried played at Findlay for 4yrs. Grimms also played some college ball. Steve Smythe played 4 yrs in college. These are just a few names that I know of from the 90's except for the Samsons who all played in the 00's.

Our youth program needs LOTS and LOTS of help. We are FAR behind the other schools in our area as far as putting skilled baseball players on the field at a young age. One thing that you just don't see anymore are kids playing ball in the backyard or at the park for fun. Its sad!

The "coaches pitch" program for ages 6-8 went to play in a couple of local All-Star tourneys at the end of last season and they got beat BAD in almost every game. Simple things such as catching, throwing, hitting, and running can be taught at home and not many kids are getting it!

The middle school for Orrville doesn't compete in the Wayne/Holmes Summer Baseball program? Why not? 2 summer's ago they had a silver team in, but they were horrible for 7th graders.

Just drove past the park and saw the boys putting up the outfield fence. Hopefully this spring won't be as wet as last year. It seemed like every game involved some mud.

Besides Kerr and Perez..who else do they have that can pitch?

I believe both Perez boys can pitch. The Infield kid may also pitch? Sampson?

Gotta swing the bat and be able to score runs...those two things were not strong areas for the Riders last Spring. If memory serves me correct, they had one kid hit over .300 last year...thats not good

I heard that not enough players went out to field a JV team, they will only field a varsity team....something needs looked at here!

Another Sampson? Lol....if so...I'm bet the ranch he can pitch.

Your sources are wrong. There will be a JV team.

HitrUs you lost your ranch. Samson will probably #5 on the pitching depth chart. Kerr, AJ Perez, JT Perez, and Schleay(?) will probably be frontline starters. And there were 5 kids over .300 last year. Samson was .506 Perez .470 Kerr and Schleay were upper 300s and Johnston was .300 on the nose. After that got pretty ugly. Pretty much same team back, needing a couple Soph. to step and to make this team click, need JT Perez, Ritche and Harrison to hit much better this year and to play with a killer attitude. Wooster and Ashland will be tough to beat but we should be able to compete for 3rd in league play. Tournament wise Central Catholic is the only team I would be afraid of in our Sect/District.

I am looking foward to Orrvilles baseball season.I think this team will turn the program around.

The program was turned around in the mid-late 90's and headed in the right direction with Rick Remenaric as the head and three consecutive regional appearances.

Then it went downhill in a hurry after he stepped down and has been in the gutter since.

Schedule has 5 of the 8 WCAL teams I think. The WCAL would be an excellent fit for our spring sports minus track where we're traditionally strong.

Add Sophomore Mason Berkbeck to the pitching list. Lane shoufler is also a talented sophomore who catches and is a very good hitter. Old Rider you have a good way of putting things. There are several tallented sophomores who do the track thing...because of the way things are...my son is one of them and I wish he played baseball instead!

Old Rider may be right about Orrville Baseball going down hill but it wouldnt hurt to be a little positive.Lets root for all the sports teams in town,all the kids in all the sports work very hard.
