I believe this will be the third consecutive year that Springfield and Campbell have scrimmaged. Last year and the year before it was the first scrimmage for each squad. This year it's at Springfield. Campbell will scrimmage Niles McKinley at Campbell. I was told that scrimmage is during the evening under the lights.

I hope this team gets better on defense. We won't beat struthers if we aren't sound.

I don't place much emphasis on 7 on 7's, but Campbell competed a passing scrimmage recently vs. Aurora (D-2) and Midpark (D-1) Aurora made the playoffs last season. From what I have heard the Red Devils held their own on offense but the secondary needs to get better.

Had a nice convo with Don Bucci yesterday...I have always seen him around and we usually talk in passing, but yesterday he asked where I was from and we started talking football. It was interesting how he felt about high school football now, he said it used to be about having fun and the team and now its all about the individual. The best thing he told me was he learned real quick when campbell and mooney were battling to..."never underestimate the heart of a campbell kid." i thought that was pretty high praise for the kids on those teams. he said some other things about some transfers from campbell that i wont post here but it was a fun convo. Also I saw Coach Sikora at the track today and he seemed pretty upbeat and confident about this group of kids. anyone that knows him knows he can be a pessimist when speculating about the upcoming year but he was surprisingly confident.

soup, I talked to Coach Sikora a few weeks ago at the mall. He was confident and upbeat then too. Does anyone have any idea when the next 7 on 7 is happening?

soup, Jefferson Area is a D-3 school in Ashtabula County. They will join the AAC this season. They are going to be in the National division, which is the small schools tier. Campbell, Girard, Lakeview, Liberty, Champion, Newton Falls, LaBrae, Jefferson Area compose that division. They finished 7-3 last season. As soon as I get my preview magazines I will let you know more. Below are the results from 2011. I do seem to remember that they had a good QB last season. But I believe he has graduated. They did beat Hubbard, Liberty, and LaBrae last season. This is a good distance to travel for an away game. The stadium is really nice and has turf.

Struthers L 29-9
Geneva W 42-27
Brookfield L 40-14
Grand Valley W 13-12
Liberty W 19-12
Conneaut W 33-0
Hubbard W 42-20
LaBrae W 13-7
Ashtabula Edgewood W 23-7
Pittsburgh University Prep L 36-0

Don't take anything you see in the scrimmages seriously. It will be as vanilla as it gets until week 1.

Just caught this on My Valley Sports. Campbell Memorial Football Preview.

Coach looks confident and upbeat. And I think he knows he has a special team. But as we all talked about was the defensive backfield. But i think a lot of teams will have a hard time running on us. But there you go as how will the backfield work out. Kind of worried in that department cause even the coach brings that up. I just hope some of those Sophomores he is talking about step up along with our good Juniors. Well anyways in case you didn't see it or noticed it was out here you go... Im off to watch the Studders preview...

Same questions over and over... And Why didn't he bring up who will replace Ja'les?? I mean how can you do a interview without asking that Question? That should have been the very first question to come out of his mouth.... Everybody wants to know that one. Unless coach asked them not to bring it up! And there are some big boys out on the team this year...

I'm going into this season with a little excitement and a lot of caution... I don't want to be let down so hard like last year did to a lot of us.. And coach knows he is good for a while on talent. But you cant help to like what you are hearing from the seniors. Making sure everyone shows up every day and not take a single rep off. LOVE THE ATTITUDE OF THIS YEARS TEAM....

It was ridiculous. Why ask the head coach and three of his players identical questions? Here's a question I would like to ask. "Is the team getting new home jerseys for this coming season?" Those home jerseys from last season were awful. As the season wore on, and the uniforms were repeatedly washed, those red numbers turned to a shade of pink. Sickening.

I would hope so... Last years jerseys were the worst jerseys i have ever seen a a devil put on.. I would like to see those jerseys from 3 or 4 years ago make a come back. Those kinda looked like a retro jerseys from the 80's...

I wonder why that reporter didn't ask the obvious question of whether or not we have a bullseye on our back?

No news is good news when it comes to Campbell and what they endured last season. I really don't put much of an emphasis on passing scrimmages. I am sure the results were typical for them. From my perspective the offense should be fine again this season, although we may not have as much speed at the wide receiver spots. Our depth will be good in the backfield. That area will have a lot of interchangeable parts. I have been told that the kid who transferred back to Campbell from Liberty is quick and elusive. I am anxious to see him run. My focus will be on the defense and special teams and whether or not those aspects can improve over last season. The defense will have holes in it if the linebackers continue to blitz on just about every down. Blitzing on every down by your linebackers is covering a weakness that the linebackers have in their technique. It leaves a defense vulnerable. And a good team will take advantage of that. The weakness I speak of is something that needs to be addressed at the lower levels. The Struthers game will be a good measuring stick to use regarding senior leadership if by some chance the Red Devils should lose that one. Struthers is going to have a solid team. And that game could go either way. If we've got seniors leading, the kids stay focused, move on to the following week and the weeks after. If we don't, we may see similiar issues popping up like last season. That being said, I am cautiously optimistic about the season.

I just saw the other day on the news the school board is getting a big sum of money for signing a deal with an oil company to drill on school owned property I wonder if they will use any of that money to give back to the community with turf for the football field.

They may, although I am sure the first priority will be to use this money for educational purposes. That being said, turf would be a great addition to our stadium.

im assuming none of that money will go to the turf. i am assuming it will go completely towards educational purposes and i cant really argue with that. i just hope its used wisely. ohio, this saturday at springfield and then the 17th at home against niles under the lights. not sure of times. on another note, this team and staff have a wierd confidence this year. it seems to me like they feel for the first time they actually have put a good hard offseason in. just feel like they have a quiet confidence. i do b elieve the devils only got beat one time last year and that was struthers. they pounded us. labrae and brookfield we beat ourselves. that being said will that loss hang over til this year. lets be honest...struthers has an offseason full of momentum. i think were going to find out alot about this staff week 1
