Jorge Arangure of ESPN.com passes along word from reporter Yancen Pujols that Indians right-hander Fausto Carmona was arrested in the Dominican Republic and is being charged with using a false identity. According to Pujols, police arrested Carmona—whose real name is apparently Roberto Hernandez Heredia—while he was leaving the American consulate after renewing his visa.
Worse than the name thing: Fausto, er, Roberto is allegedly 31 years old, not 28.

he can get in some big trouble couldnt he for that? thought I read where a player got his contract voided when he used a fake name and was older than he stated.

When looking for alternate identities to steal, he allegedly threw a dart at a dartboard, it hit completely off the board and stuck to a business card on the other side of the wall with the name Fausto Carmona. The rest is history.

Really though, the name is meaningless. The age thing is the key. He's now OLD...

He couldn't pitch when people thought he was 28 either, so I'm not too concerned about the age thing.

With Leo Nunez, Carmona and other stories like this, is it unfair to question any Latin pitcher who performs well at a very young age?

Heck, I wonder about Johnny Cueto. He was a phenom who tore up all minor league levels at age 20 and 21. Next year will be his 5th MLB season and he's only 25.

I will always love "Fausto" soley based on his Game 2 performance against the NYY.

I have no ill-will towards him, even if this is true.

I do hope he's off the roster though.

I agree. And 31 really isn't that old for a MLB pitcher. I think the Tribe has options on him for 2 more years after this, so he is only under contract until he turns 33. So the age thing really doesn't concern me. The fact that he can't throw strikes and is mental are my biggest concerns with him.

Maybe now that he is 31 he will have matured as a pitcher?

I think it's grounds to void his contract, but I don't have his contract in front of me so I can only speculate.

Helps kind of explain his performance in the 2007 ALCS a little better now. Those extra 3 years would have made him 26 instead of 23. Wasn't quite the inexperienced youngster we all figured him to be.

it'd be more depressing if he was actually good. the fact that fausto/roberto sucks just makes it a very humorous story

31 IS old when we're talking terrible starting pitchers who already signed a big contract extension. At 31, there's no upside. At 28, there still can be. It's old...and I'm 28.

The Indians picked up his $7 million option for this season back in October, much to my displeasure.

This makes sense since his one year (2007) of good pitching......which would of made him 27.

You can never trust these Dominicans..... lol

That is why I think that contract was insane the Angels gave him.

If you look at his numbers he has been on the decline for about 2-3 years now. It is entirely plausible he is actually 34-35 instead of his listed 32. That 10 year deal is going to look like the world's biggest albatross by about year 6-7.

So many Dominican guys have been busted for bogus ages I don't know how any team can sign these guys believing their actual ages.

Voiding his contract would just make him a free agent....If they didn't want his contract they could have just not picked up his option. Unless they've changed their mind, what's the point?

Good riddance. I will take the 7 million back. The pussy was a mental head case. He could be up 2 outs, then walk a batter after a long at bat, and then all of a sudden he gives up a 4 run inning.
