Ballgame. I can't help but laugh. It couldn't have happened to a better team.

WOW. Mevez gives them a chance and Akron blows it. Kicking it over the goal is inexcusable.

Yeah, those 3 kickers should be walking home. That was downright inexcusable.

Hopefully Porter is named the new coach at Indiana soon, now that the season is over for Akron.

Might have to compete with the DC United for his services. I hope he stays at Akron but there are definitely some attractive opportunities coming his wayLaley23 wrote: Hopefully Porter is named the new coach at Indiana soon, now that the season is over for Akron.

That's why this sport has no credibility with the majority of America. You get to a big game like this, the World Cup, the Olympic Gold medal, a state high school championship, and it so often comes down to penalty kicks.
Let's decide a basketball game with a best of 5 free throw contest. Or a tied football game with an extra point kicking contest. Or a baseball game with a home run hitting contest.
I agree with the poster earlier who suggested to just play on till someone scores. See who is the best conditioned, who has the best depth if it's a scoreless tie after two hours, or whatever it is that they play...

Yeah but basketball and football are fairly high scoring sports so their overtimes can be a bit different.
Hockey and soccer usually are low scoring so to have high-caliber teams compete until someone scores is dangerous and boring.

Does NHL/college hockey follow the shootout format for playoff games that are tied? Or do they keep going overtime?

NHL keeps playing "regular" hockey until someone scores in the playoffs. College postseason hockey, no idea as I'm a tOSU fan.

NHL uses shootouts in the reg. season but plays sudden death OT in the playoffs....Not sure what NCAA does during the reg. season but I know they use sudden death in the postseason also....I imagine they use the shootout during the reg. season too, but I'm not sure.
It is ridiculous that a championship game is decided by penalty kicks. That is THE lamest thing EVER!!!!

Akron is credited with a loss in the Championship- NCAA Rules of Competition. They do not want an undefeated team not wining the title, so there is no loser in the semi, it is a draw. There is a loser in the Final.

^^^What?!?? If it's a tie going into the shootout in the semis, and you lose the shootout, you don't get credited with a loss??? Did I read that correctly?

NCAAsports.com is listing them as 23-0-2, then the game article says 23-1-1.
