What is the going rate for 4H grown Black Angus beef processed, package and frozen.
I been ask to go in with three other to buy a 1/4 of the prize winning Black Angus.

What is the going price for something like this?

I bought a side of grass-fed beef (either longhorn or beulingo, I can't remember) from my grandma. It was $2/lb to her and 50¢ to the processer.

I know it isn't exactly what you're looking for but it might help.

What county? Or was this from the state fair?

Most people that buy meat from the fairs do it for the advertisement, not because it's a good price on meat.

Good point. If you're wanting to go in on the grand champion steer you'll be spending a ton of money.

All I can tell you is this is from a 4H club down in Dover /New Phil area one of the guys relatives boy rasied the beef and it won something and then it when on to win something else, it came up for sale. I'm not sure but I think it already been package... I would get about 150 pounds plus of meat both front / back cuts and lots of hamburger. Simply put it would run me $3.70 a pound..

The price of a grand champion animal is going to vary from exhibition to exhibition. Belly, your best bet is to look at previous prices for champion animals in that county (I am presuming) to therefore determine what your likely going to pay live-price. Most of your champions are purchased to support the exhibitor, not because they're going to "taste good."

Also, just because a steer is black doesn't mean it is Angus. You'll more than likely be buying a steer with a high Maine/Chi-influence, neither of which are known for marbling.

Thanks for that information: I'm very sure that the beef is Black Angus there some documentation we get with the purchase, plus the guy I know who the relative of this boy has told me .... I trust this guy

My wife's dad is a farmer (with steers/cows), so she knows a lot about farm shit...I know nothing. BUT...she did tell me this...the "Black Angus" advertisement is a ploy to get you to believe you are eating higher quality beef. She said that almost all steers that are butchered for human consumption are Black Angus steers...the other steers aren't as edible.

So if you're paying more for this beef because it says it's "black angus"....you're probably getting fucked. Like I am...by the farmer's daughter....once every 2-3 months.

Obviously they don't know what the fuck they are talking about then, as most steers are crossbred composites.

No problem. If the steer you are planning to purchase is a breed champion (i.e., is the champion of the Angus division of the show), then yes, you would be purchasing an Angus steer (a pedigree or registration paper would confirm this.) I am not sure what county Dover is in nor what the set up of that county fair is so I can't comment furthermore on that. Good luck.

I think Dover is within 30 miles of Mantooth, though, so that means there's a good chance this steer has been inseminated at least once. That could drive down its worth a lot.

I don't think those are county fair prices. (The grand champ at the Ohio State fair this year sold for $85,000) It sounds like a deal to me.

I agree with her that the black angus thing is a racket. AFAIK farmers with angus steers pay the angus association (whatever it's called) a fee to be able to call there steers black angus. Then the association goes out and markets for them. I don't think it's really any better, just better marketed. (and there are probably angus steers out there that can't be sold as black angus because those farmers don't want to pay the association.)

My Dad (who spend twenty years raising cattle as a hobby) always told us the main reason that Black Angus beef is pushed is because the breed is what they call a better "meater" in cooler climates - they put on the most meat per pound of feed or unit of pasture than any other breed.. It's good beef, but it's not particularly special.

I'm just gonna sit back and watch you perverts have fun with the term "meater". :D
