So I keep hearing that there are parents who are debating whether their kids should see the movie. Can someone who knows more about it shed some light as to why a parent may not want their kids to see it?

I don't know a lot about it, but I'm guessing it's because the general idea of the movie is children fighting each other to the death...bigdaddy2003;1125157 wrote:So I keep hearing that there are parents who are debating whether their kids should see the movie. Personally, I grew up playing video games that most would deem inappropriate, and watching gory/horror movies...I turned out fine.
People are pansies now...

I'm actually fairly excited to see this movie. As I stated previously in this thread, I never read the books (mostly because I don't read books in general), but I've heard nothing but great things about the books, and the trailer looked pretty exciting as well.
I suspect this to be one of the top grossing movies this year.

I didnt read the book, but the movie is well done. Quality actors, interesting plot. 1% sucking the blood out of the 99%, effete and decadent upper class, bread and circuses,
the oppressed people being forced to live in West Virginia, throw in a satire on reality tv, the skills from the survivor series put to good use.

Just got back a little bit ago and it was pretty good.
Well just a small overview the book/movie puts 24 kids ranging from ages 12-18 and they get put into an arena until only 1 survives. So it's kids killing kids.bigdaddy2003;1125157 wrote:So I keep hearing that there are parents who are debating whether their kids should see the movie. Parts of the book describe the deaths in detail. Not gore, but enough to paint a nice picture.

Which on many days, really isn't that distasteful of a concept.Iliketurtles;1125548 wrote:Just got back a little bit ago and it was pretty good.

Saw it tonight. Obviously, the book was better, but overall I was pleased with the movie. They could have made it a cheesy action movie with the scenes from the arena, but they didn't. The movie took the major parts from the book and highlighted them well. Of course there were some things that needed to be altered to fit the movie (such as the death of one of the Careers), but for a PG13 flick I was pleased.
*******SPOILERS*******
I liked how the movie showed how the gamemakers "controlled" the arena/games. If you've read the books then you'll understand why the director added this to the film. You get to see how Crane attempts to control the games, while dealing with pressure from President Snow to "control the spark."
My only gripe is that I feel like the movie just touched on some things, rather than explaining them in more detail. Such as Katniss and Rue's relationship. The movie only has them together for a short sequence, while their bond had much more meaning in the books. Hell, Rue was the reason why Katniss survived in the games in the first place. Rue nursed her back to health. The two developed a friendship before deciding to trick the Careers. Also, no mention of the fact that Rue reminded Katniss of her sister Prim.

I've heard some parents who took their kids to see it bitching about the fact it was about kids killing kids. (I read the books, but haven't seen the movie yet.) First of all, if you are going to take your pre-teen or even teen kids to a movie, shouldn't you have some idea what the movie is about? And second, there's enough shown in the trailers and been sooo much talk of the movie if you didn't figure it out before, somethings wrong.

As an FYI...she doesnt look nearly that good in the movie!
It was OK. I would give it a 3 outta 5. Wouldnt go to the theatre and pay to see it again, maybe rent it on redbox. I didnt hate it, but wasnt thoroughly impressed.
On a sidenote it was funny when the theatre manager came in before the movie, told everyone they must turn OFF their cell phones...Not on vibrate or silent, but turn off, and if they see any screens light up they will ask the person to leave. OF course I had to laugh at my wife and step daughter that they wouldnt be able to last two hours without their phones!

So I keep hearing how this movie is for women but the previews don't really show that. So can someone who is more informed than I am please explain what the preview doesn't show that makes it a chick flick.

Its not really a chick flick. There are few chick flick moments but they're brief.bigdaddy2003;1128638 wrote:So I keep hearing how this movie is for women but the previews don't really show that. Its about kids killing eachother for sport, tough to turn that into a chick flick.
