Rocket, since they have their big combine coming up in a few weeks where they bring in kids from multiple states to try out for the team, I fixed your post.Rocket08;1091487 wrote:Oh, look, the whiny hypocrite found this thread

That's kinda my point there rain man.
You don't have a real strong grasp on symbolism do ya? It's funny how people slam on Massillons titles, but then start threads on where their team is ranked nationally or statewide even. Sorry Big Red fans, I'll leave now.

It's your kids team.
High school is not like pro, or to some extent college, as in that everyone pretty much graduates from high school, so that is and will always be "your team"...at least it should be if you have any pride.
I can see if you work for a school, or are heavily involved, but if you're just someone who shows up for a few hours in the fall to watch a game, then I can't see how you can jump on the bandwagon and call it "your team".
If I moved to Hillard and sent my kid to Davidson, I wouldn't get on the internet and talk trash and claim that "my team" has 2 D1 state titles recently.

^^^^ Yea but some parents who may have went and graduated from Steubenville have say called Toronto home for 20 years and raised kids threw that system and went to all the tee ball games pee wee football games junior high games and then high school games and got to know all the kids the kids parents and teachers and coaches and probably coached pee wee ball and stuff like that . you see where im getting at here .
Now I see wht your saying as far as people just adopting a team ,but i have to say we at Big Red do have a whole lot of that so Im not going to bash them in any way . i man if they want to call Big Red there team then I for one am glad to adopt them into my family . Thats just how I look at it . It doesnt get under my skin in any case . Obviously you cant say thats my alma mater if its not .

I don't recall saying you weren't. All this started because your guy had a meltdown over me calling him on his silly assertion that BR was a Top 5 team in the state last year.ManO'War;1089459 wrote:Fish, you can root for anyone you like.... i went to YSU but root for the Buckeyes too, but id never say they were my team since i didnt attend the university.
BTW, using any criteria that you like Big Red is an elite team in Ohio history.

It wasnt like last year was loaded with juggernaughts, so who knows?
Where do you rank Mooney last year?

The thread title has Big Red in it . If you dont like Big Red fans proping our team up go somewhere else and support your unnamed team . You dont have to agree with me but just because you dont doesnt mean you have to start with the personnel attacks . Now go away . Big Red was close to if not a top 5 team last year and we were better than the mooney .. The better team doesnt always win ..fish82;1091762 wrote:I don't recall saying you weren't. Helps who? Your entitled to your opinion . Big Red was better than the Mooney last year . We lost . Its over . We have won several times in our history while not being the better team . We have lost a whole lot of games we should have won . Upsets happen and last year Nobody knew how good we really were . The Mooney got help from the calls for sure . We did make some dumb calls that also cost us the game. We let off the pedal and punted on 4th and 5 on the Mooney's 34 yard line . Love our coach he is the best but he does get conservitive in crunch time situations at times .. We blew it and the refs didnt help . I do know this We beat the crap out of that team . Hope this helps.ts1227;1092906 wrote:I disagree with both of your assertions.

Understand something though not every time in any sport the best team wins . Buster Douglas wasnt a better boxer than Mike Tyson but I did enjoy that fight alot.

I'd like to add my two cents as to what Big Red's schedule should look like. You are free to disagree with me if you want, but please don't bash my head in if you do disagree.
I think every year Big Red should play one team they are expected to loss to. I'm thinking of someone of the callibar of Don Bosco or St. Ignatius.
I think we should play four games against good teams that we are likely to beat, but they could very well beat us. Massillon and Ursuline come to mind. Also Dover or Mooney or Watterson.
Then we should play five teams that we definitely would beat but can bring us some computer points. Buffalo St. Joe's and Baltimore MoJo are good examples.
This would make a much more interesting schedule for the fans. Yes, we would have to play one more away game every year, but so what? Away games are an adventure. Some of our best wins of all time have taken place in other teams' stadiums. As far as money is concerned, we could make the arrangement that the team that sells the tickets can keep the money. Even if we play Massillon and they bring 3000 people, we will still sell 6000 tickets at our end at $6 a head. That ain't cabbage. And Massillon takes home $18,000 so they're satisfied. There's plenty in the pot to go around. It's a big pot.
Playing five competitive games a year would make the schedule a lot more interesting. It would better prepare us for the playoffs. Last year we played two competitive games and the schedule was boring. Playing reserves is good for the future, but I would still rather see the varsity in the fourth quarter fighting for their lives.
That's my two cents.

How do you know who from year to year is going to be "good"?
Buchtel was the defending state runnerup, but according to you the game was "boring". St Joes and Mojo were both dogfights. Mojo was one of the best games of the year.
And as far as the money deal...we bring a lot of fans on the road, but unfortunately our fans don't buy their tickets at the school.

Buchtel was a flash in the pan. I saw them play Pittsburgh CC the year they won the runner-up trophy, and believe me, I didn't think they would go very far. However, they did beat Massillon, so I have to give them that.ManO'War;1101547 wrote:How do you know who from year to year is going to be "good"?

St. JOe's, MoJo, Brooke, and Morgantown are usually always a step behind us. The four teams together have only given us one loss. I would place them among the five teams each year that we are expected to win.
There are a lot of teams that are expected to do well each year. Massillon, Ursuline, Mooney, Dover, Boardman, Watterson, Poland, and a great many others fall into that category. We should be playing more of them.
As far as playing a superstar, I'd like us to play one highly rated team in a Rally in Death Valley every year. It could be Iggy or St. Ed or a big team from Cincinnati. Or it could be Bosco or a big team from Florida. We might lose the game, but we would make a lot of money and we would get toughened up for the playoffs.

I would hardly call Buchtel a flash in the pan..they have 2 state titles and 3 runnerups.
As for their game ve PCC, what killed them was their special teams, and that was a very good PCC team. Buchtel also beat Mooney pretty bad that year in the regional final.
If anything was a flash in the pan it was The Rally In Death Valley, so i dont understand why you keep bringing it up.

PCC is a perennial contender in the WPIAL for the AAAA title. They also have a huge number of players and a huge student body to pull from. Not to mention they draw from the entire city and suburbia of Pittsburgh. It would be like Buchtel playing Iggy, St. Ed, St. X, etc.

PCC put the smackdown on a very very good Ursulin team down in Wheeling the year before also. Buhctel is no way near a flash in the pan . Aside from there two state titles they have atleast three state runners up over the years . Now they have Ricky Powers as the head coach and he seems to really have the team in the right direction . I watched them very closely against PCC . Those kids are good and well coached . They didnt have any quit in them either . Watch out for Buhctel they will be back in state.

What about my idea of playing four good teams and one super team? And why aren't we playing Maple Heights? That sounds llike a natural for us.

Other than keeping this board active, Fairwoodking is just throwing out some more of his nonsense on what he perceives to be the inadequacies in Big Red's Football scheduling. He still misses the point that we are division 3 with average depth; thus the schedule we play gives us the opportunity to give the underclassmen some very good experience. I might add that this has worked out very well for us over the years since the bottom line is to get to the playoffs.war_admiral;1104010 wrote:RING RING!! RING RING!! Also, it makes no sense to load up on larger teams and take a hit on injuries. Let's enjoy the teams we field.
Anyway, what he might like to see has little or no importance since he only comes in for a game or two.

Just for the record, I either see every game or I listen to it on the internet. Don't forget-- I live 2500 miles from Steubenville. The fact that I come home every year to see some games proves what a devoted fan I am.SUPER787;1104370 wrote:Other than keeping this board active, Fairwoodking is just throwing out some more of his nonsense on what he perceives to be the inadequacies in Big Red's Football scheduling.
