Cameron showed some ability to catch the ball when he got the opportunity to play, problem was he hasn't been playing football long and had two pretty good tight ends (Watson, Moore) and a decent tight end who blocks well (Smith) in front of him. Marecic should improve in year two and seems to fit the system. Skrine looked pretty good and could develop into a good starter. Pinkston played well considering they switched him to a position he has NEVER played before. His natural position is at tackle. Hagg just kind of filled in for injuries at the end of the season, but he's a 7th rounder so what do you expect?
TE and FB weren't positions of need. TE was probably where we were the most set heading into the draft last year. I think the Cameron and Marecic selections could have been better used elsewhere. I don't care what they might do next year, or what potential they might have going forward. Judging the draft right now, they haven't done anything on the field.
I think Pinkston was pretty bad this year. I don't see any way he gets moved to RT. That would be a disaster. I'm not overly impressed by the fact that he might be a serviceable guard once he better learns the position. There are a ton of starting guards in this league that were late round picks. It's not the toughest spot to fill. And for this year, he was not good.
I agree about Hagg. For a 7th round pick I don't expect anything out of him. Anything you get is a bonus.
Skrine showed some flashes. He might be able to pass as a starting CB at some point, at minimum he looks like a guy that could play the nickel. He was a solid pick.
Overall, I don't see how you could be very impressed by that collection of players. C- is slightly below average. It's not like I gave it an F. They went and took projects at positions we were actually strong in and, potential or not, neither Cameron or Marecic really did anything on the field to help the team this year. I don't find that to be solid drafting for a team with as many holes as the Browns had and still have. If they emerge as good players next season then guess what? You could re-grade again.
Colin Kaepernick has a lot of potential. Should the Niners get an A for that pick because he might develop into a good QB some day? That doesn't make sense. If you're re-grading a draft, it has to be based on what the players actually did. The initial pre-draft grade is the one that is based on what you believe they could do.
