As an IU grad and fan, I agree completely with what has been said here about the officials. However, that crowd at Assembly is as good as it gets in nation and, with that considered, when the flow of the game is so damaged by the officials, the home team usually can compensate if their fans are willing to work to push them along. I think that is what happened vs. OSU. Last 3-5 years, in that environment OSU wins by 15+. Of course, I always say the more teams in the conference that play at a high level the better it is for all teams in the conference - better for recruiting, better for tournament preperation, better for rankings, etc. Now, if we can just avoid talking about football......

Disrupting the flow was a big part, but the refs were taking away the inside game on both ends. Turns out that IU's midrange shooting is about 4 points better than OSU's

I agreed that the refs were bad, both ways, but OSU took the brunt of the bad calls. I think OSU is a solide 12-18 pt better team than IU if the game goes on as normal without the foul problems.

As an IU fan, I am elated they won, no doubt about that, but I am also a realist. When OSU had their main guys it you could see such a difference in ability and I fear that OSU will beat IU by 20+ at Kmart arena in a couple of weeks.

Gotta give the hoosiers credit though. I wont get too excited until they can win on the road. They are what.....14-1? With a road win at NC State? I guess there is only one thing that can be better than 14-1 so I am happy about the start, but not ready to crown this team big ten champs or even a elite 8 team.

Fortunately it won't be too long before the Hoosiers come to Columbus. As we saw last year against Purdue and Wisconsin, and this year against Florida and Duke.....Ohio State is a much different team in the Schott.

Found this interesting. Sully and Buford played closer to their average minuets than Zeller or Watford. Zeller only played about four minutes in the second half. Granted because of the fouls the defense was matador like but still an interesting tidbit. Ohio State is definitely better but I don't know about 15 points better On a neutral court

Well, didnt sully only play a few min in a game or 2 because of injury? that could hurt his avg PT as well.
BOth IU and OSU has had some big tiem blowouts before the conference started, but I bet that Zeller and waford played more mins than the OSU combo in their blowouts......just a hunch, because watching that game it seemed like those two from OSU were on the bench way too much.

As I pretty much predicted, Zeller has shown that he does have alot to improve on to play against top teams in B10. He needs to be stronger with the ball an denying in the post.

I think Elston shouldnt see the court, or at least Crean tell him that he only shoots on putbacks or for sure layups because that kid is brutal against good teams. His running jump shot off the board about gave me a heart attack. He is starting to rank up there as my least fav hoosier of all time (Lindeman has that title now).

Doesn't matter. Indiana won, so they are clearly the better team.

Well it certainly wasnt Watford. Looks like I misread that, he played 35.

-Sully averaging 26 minutes a game, played 29.
-Buford averaging 31, played 26.
-Zeller averaging 27, played 21.

Sullys average minutes is probably lower with the SC game and all these minutes are after the OSU-IU game. But, Zeller wasnt on the court at all in the 2nd half. And when he was, he had I think 8 pts. Played great in limited minutes. The biggest thing, imo, was the shit defense they played on Indiana for fear of another foul. That was what the refs really did.

Avg min at this point in the season dont' mean much with all the blowouts that go on. On top of that, Sully played the SC game, but was out for that game within the first 5 min.

Here was a couple of my issues with this game.
-Number one, OSU was screwed out of at least two timeouts in the first half. On one, the shot clock expired on IU as a scramble for the ball resulted in the officials calling a timeout for OSU. Matta said he was yelling shot clock, not timeout. Its no reviewable btw.
The other was when Buford basically got hammered. Ball went behind the basket on his "shot". Well, Buford doesn't just miss a shot by that much. NO call. OSU takes ball out, can't get it inbounds, has to use a timeout. Buford should have been shooting foul shots.
- OSU had a ten point lead at one point in first half. Then, with basically 10 min to go, OSU three leading scorers are all sitting on the bench in foul trouble, Sulllinger, Buford and Thomas. That 10pt lead ends up being a deficit by half time. Some of those fouls were very questionable. Especially when you watch just how physical the big ten is.
-Second half, inconsistant no calls. As you mentioned, Buford 4th foul was a joke. Sully took a charge, one official called it, the other overuled. Craft drives at the end, gets hammered, no call, turnover.

Again, OSU had their chance to win the game. When you go on the road, you know you are going to have to deal with adversity. But these officials were poor. Dakich and studio guys were even commenting. They took the flow away from the game. They were inconsistant. Its not always about total fouls in the end.

Anyway, IU got the win, and were the better team that nite. I knew it would be a tough game, a close game. Was not surprised or shocked to see OSU lose the game. How they lost it, and with officiating as poor as it was, that was a bit of a surprise.

Maybe this was a good "L" for OSU. I know someone who went to practice the day before, and Matta was not too happy with the preparation going into IU. Players were not very focused and dicking off.

Anyway, just my two cents. Game over with. I look forward to the 15th.

I agree with you. I just found it interesting Sully was able to play basically 30 minutes and Zeller only 21. I know the averages and such are no where near accurate, and the play because of the refs was altered. I mentioned that in other threads. But until I looked, I hadnt realized how little Zeller played and how much Sully actually did. I still find it inexcusable for Sullinger to only take 5 shots a game. I dont care how bad things are going/being called. Sully needs to take more than 5 shots.

As for the charge/block. Who called it a charge? The ref underneath called block and his "and-1" signal looked like a charge call. But he never called a charge, it was a block all the way (and a terrible call at that).

The biggest thing I thought was how poorly Craft played at the end of the 1st half and end of the game. OSU could have been up 8 pts at the half, despite the fouls. But IU got 3 easy shots, after 3 OSU turnovers and 2 of them in the last minute off Oladipo stripping Craft. Then the end of the game turnovers were inexcusable. The pass by Craft that Smith(??) couldnt save and the pass by I forget who that led to the Oladipo reverse. Cant have those. That and Buford thinking he is MJ. That shot was horrendous.

Hulls also shouldnt be able to drive by guys like he did. I know the big 3 he hit was on Buford, and I think the lefty lay-up was Buford as well. Then the tough runner was on Craft...all towards the end of the game. I think the fouls led to the sagging defense on the 3, but if Buford and Craft were worried about fouls, why were they up on Hulls enough for him to go around them? Just uncharacteristic play the last 2 minutes of each half from OSU which cost them. I would bet IU outscored OSU the last minutes of each half by double digits.

EDIT: Just looked. The last 2 minutes of each half combined, IU outscored OSU 13-4. I wouldnt have expected that kind of poor execution from OSU, but credit IU for taking advantage and cashing in.

I agree, but dont underestimate a former coach/player trying overly much to not sound like a homer when he is doing or analyzing games.

I was going to say that too, especially after hearing his radio show quite often. but Im not sure that was the case. Dak has been really solid and unbiased in his broadcasts. I think he is one of the top 2-3 analysts that ESPN has. BTN should have hired him before some of the others they did.

No, it doesn't excuse Craft for turning the ball over. IMO, Hulls would have been on Craft if Buford had not gone to the bench, thus the turnovers would have never happened.A not so obvious impact the officials had on this game.
