And so are you for this then and why?
doesnt matter if i am for it or against it (honestly i know nothing about it. cant even remember what it was about from when i first read it on here.) all i do know is, people will move on to other sites. google and wikipedia are nice, but yes, there are other sites out there that can do what those sites do. the internet did exist before google and wikipedia. hell, wikipedia is fighting to stay alive as it is right?

stupid analogy. That's like saying people got around before cars, so if we take away 75% of the worlds gas pumps for a day everyone will be cool... there's gonna be some uproar.

Please pray for Justin Cummings and his whole family, as he was in a car crash and may never walk again [he may be paralyzed waist-down].

your analogy fails too, the gap is too large. its more like if all the cars made after year 2000 didnt exist.

so does a shit ton of other search engines.

For example, i searched for SOPA on both google and yahoo. 4 of the top 10 results were the same.

it would be like saying Shell no longer exists. BP, Marathon, and Citgo would work just as good.

You don't understand what SOPA would do at all then. People couldn't just "move on" because SOPA would make it so that sites like Google, Wikipedia, Bing, Youtube, any site that has user generated content impossible to run as any user violation could be used by the RIAA or MPAA or whatever to make the government shut down the whole site.

It wouldn't just be a "oh they shut down Google, that's sucks I'll use Bing instead". SOPA and PIPA make it so that it's absurdly easy for the music and movie industries to make the government shut down sites that really aren't doing anything wrong.

thought we were talking about their one day website shut down protest, not SOPA?

We're talking about both. The website shutdown thing is a taste of what could be coming if SOPA and/or PIPA are passed and so your "just use Yahoo/a different encyclopedia (which there really isn't a comparible offering that matches Wikipedia's breadth)" wouldn't really be a solution.

Reddit's cofounder had a good point on CNBC: "Why is it that when Republicans and Democrats need to solve the budget and the deficit, there's deadlock, but when Hollywood lobbyists pay them $94 million dollars to write legislation, people from both sides of the aisle line up to co-sponsor it?"

If twitter or Facebook were to take part along with Wikipedia in shutting down, shit may break loose.

Considering how many people uses those sites on a daily basis, people might panic (mainly Facebook). I'm not kidding since so many people are damn addicted to social networking it would be a huge statement.

Here's what Google and Wikipedia look like right now.

SOPA Search.

Non-SOPA search.

So its the first amendment...that's how far it has to go before people get fired up. They shit on the 2nd amendment...only "whackos and nuts" cared, now they go after the first amendment and people finally wake up.
