You know the amazing thing - Hiland didn't play all that well. How they won by 50 is beyond me. I guess they did shoot the 3 ball well.

I didn't see the whole game, as Ricola knows. Coming straight from work, and as a man who is this thin, I can only go so long without food, so I was outta there early in the 4th.

SV has had nothing and done nothing since Jake Cayton took his talents to wherever he took them. It's the biggest school in the IVC. Something is not right. Coach O looked like he knew they were going to lose by 50 and coached like it. I don't get it.

Cleveland Central Catholic will invade rival Cleveland VASJ on Friday in a North Coast Conference showdown featuring two teams with plenty of history.

The VASJ Vikings come into the contest with a (5-3) mark, but its losses were to the likes of Lakewood St. Edward and unbeatens Bedford Chanel and Cleveland Heights.

The Vikings are on a two-game losing streak, but still playing well nonetheless.

VASJ will likely start 6-7 junior Demonte Flannigan, 5-11 senior Karl Garner, 6-2 junior Duane Gibson, 5-10 senior Mel Burke, and 6-1 freshman Brian Parker.

6-6 freshman Carolton Bragg and seniors Mike McGarry and Rodney Burse are nice options off the bench.

Flannigan is leading the team in scoring at 19.1 points and rebounding at 13.5 boards a night. Parker adds 12.5 markers. Garner is next with 12 points per contest and Gibson is netting 10.9 a game. Bragg is scoring just over four points off the bench.

Cleveland Central Catholic, a year removed from the Division III State Championship Game, has struggled to a (3-5) start largely due to inexperience and youthfulness.

The Ironmen have faced some fierce competition and suffered defeat to Akron SVSM, Cleveland Benedictine, Bedford Chanel, Mentor Lake Catholic, and Garfield Heights.

According to first-year Ironmen head coach Jonathan Harris, youth has certainly played a part.

“We are some babies,” joked the former Cleveland Rhodes boss about how young his team was. “We are going through some growing pains. A lot of these kids played freshmen basketball last season and have now been thrown into the fire, but we are getting better, finding ourselves, and I think we are due for a big win.”

Harris also gave plenty of credit to the opponents.

“We are playing teams with great senior guards with the will to win,” Harris explained. “When you have seniors with the ball in their hands, they believe they control their own destiny.”

Central Catholic will start just one senior in 6-6 Darion Bruster. Juniors Gregory Snyder (6’1) and Carlos White (6’3) will join sophomores Greg Alexander (5’10) and Shavante Montgomery (6’2) to round the starters.

Lengthy 6-6 senior Alan Harper will lead the bench squad. He will be joined by Stephen Stone (6’4/So.) and Demario Cooper (6’4/So.).

Alexander and Harper were the only returnees, which saw significant minutes last season.

The court that Lebron played on should have been re-named PRCC North Saturday night. I'm guessing that somewhere between half and 2/3 of the fans were Hiland. That was great to see.

One question: Couldn't Lebron buy them a better PA system? Otherwise the atmosphere was great and the Irish were great hosts.

The only thing I heard all night was the prayers offered before the games.

The big benefit there is that I think Malvern is putting it's eggs in the basket of 3/10 at Meadowbrook. I don't think too many Hornet fans expected a win the other night. I think they were hoping to keep it reasonably close, and then say that on a neutral floor, if they make a few more plays, they can knock off the Hawks. I think the 22 point margin gives Hiland a big edge because it introduces doubt as to whether the Hornets can beat them. That's my theory anyway.

Agree that it was unlikely many Hornet fans (outside of the coach and some of the players) figured they would come away with a win on the Hawks' floor. Don't see how they could expect a win in meadowbrook. If they could only come within 10 on their floor (and I've always contended that floor is worth about 10 points...which seems about right when you look at the scores over he last decade or so) there is no way they win elsewhere. Sometimes (most times) the more talented team is just plain going to win the game, and tho they have very good players, they don't match hiland's talent. (Which kind of stinks for them---that same team would have probably won the IVC 8 out of 10 times; they just happened to coincide with very good Hiland teams the last 2 years. Also, have been very impressed with Tucci. A very good offensive player. Forces things a bit at times, but understndably. I'd take him over his older brother any day--seems less of a hot head as well). Of course anything can happen, and Hiland is one injury away from a major derailment (e.g. when Dyl got upended going for the big chase-down block tuesday...or imagine a major ankle sprain or similar to Jason e.g.) or major foul problems, etc. But barring the unforseen--i think it still comes down to Hiland and Rosecrans.
Related---saw in the program Malvern had not beaten us since 2008. Kind of surprised me; didn't realize it had been that long.

First off, stop putting my nightmares into black and white words.

As to SV and the IVC - the bottom is really bad. TCC isn't very strong. RW probably isn't as good as they could be. Garaway is in transition. There is Hiland, and then a pretty good gap, and then Malvern, followed by pretty good gap, and then Garaway, followed by a huge gap. That's how I see it, anyway.

yeah that's a pretty accurate way to put it. Can't remember this poor of an IVC top to bottom (or more accurately middle to bottom--the top 2 are pretty darn good) for a long time. reminds me of the Big Ten in the 70s

Speaking of IVC..did you notice RW beat (I think it was East Richland Christian) by about 50 last week? That was the team that was Hiland's sacrifical lamb their first tourney game last year (I think). The game where Coach by the end of the game was telling the team to "let them score". If they are indeed in our sectional again this year, I see that rematch a distinct possibility. Calling the over/under differential in that game right now at 65 1/2 points...

East Richland Christian is in the sectional at New Phila again this year. Unless a higher seed steps in front of them to take on Hiland in the first round that matchup will happen again.

re Spark: yup..theres a couple of numbers to add to the left side of the year end record. In ten years when people look back--all they'll remember is the record--not who they played.

Was somewhat impressed with TCC last night--they were certainly game for at least the 1st quarter (until that 20-2 run sparked by the intentional push on Dyl [and nonbody try to tell me that wasn't deserved], the Tee on the bench, etc) then the wheels kind of fell off after Hiland ratcheted up the dee. That was relentless. But their frosh guard did a pretty darn good job of not turning the ball over, and as a team they made some shots I didn't expect them to make. They certainly looked better than a few other IVC teams I've seen so far.

Ridgewood has definitely improved since the last time these two teams met. They made a game of it all the way into the 4th. For some reason Hiland never plays well in that gym. I believe Hiland had 15 turnovers.

It was kind strange (for lack of a better term) when Kaufman had that big two handed dunk a few of the Ridgewood fans applauded it. One lady across the court from me actually stood up and clapped her hands. It looked like a couple of Ridgwood players may have said something to Kaufman about it during a stop in play shortly after. Whatever it was it drew smiles from all of them.
