I am reading Ron Chernow's biography of Hamilton. He's the one founder who's fascinated me the most. His story of coming from nothing in the West Indies to shaping the birth and future of our nation as much as any of his contemporaries in almost beyond belief. Anyway, For those intested in early American history, I highly recommend this superbly written volume.

Hamilton was a warmonger and was cool with things like the Alien and Sedition act. Go Burr.

I just finished a bio of Burr called Fallen Founder which was very good. I'll look into the Hamilton one now. I've always had a fascination with them because their duel was on my birthday.

How was Fallen Founder? Reading about the lives of these guys is fascinating. Very different perspectives that intersected at a critical point in time.

Well the part about the alien and sedition act is simply fact, he was a main proponent of it.

I know he supported it, but I want to read further before I make a judgement as it's been a lot of years since I have studied this era. I may be in agreement with you then, I don't know. Where I am currently in Hamiltons life- all I can say is the guy is incredibly compelling. I've read few bios about someone making such a powerful impression on so many at such a young age. He clearly had a remarkable way about him. Washington certainly knew he was very special and kept him close even though they weren't that close personally.

I wish they would bring back the duel. Let these politicicans off themselves. Harry Reid could take on Mitch McConnell. Barney Frank would challenge anyone to a sword fight.

I'm a history buff so I agree that this is certainly compelling stuff. In fact there is a copy of the Federalist Papers underneath my copy of Portal 2 sitting on my desk right now.

What's especially interesting to me about this period is the uncertainty. Time has dulled the idea of the revolution as a routine set of events occuring in linear fashion: colonies fed up with British treatment, colonies galvonize for war, victory acheived, government designed and implemented, everyone lives happily ever after. In reality there was so much uncertainty as to what was going to come next. Proponents of the war of independence had differeent motives. There was a large segment of the population who envisioned a loose confederation of states thereafter with the state courts reigning as the supreme power deciders. Hamilton was interesting to me as he clearly saw the risks associated witht his. You can also easily see the seeds of the civil war being planted.

It was a very good read. Hamilton and Burr were ahead of their time in campaigning and politicking. They could teach current pols a thing or two.

Of course cheering for Burr as you did for john walker lindh. Burr was a traitor leading a conspiracy to dismember the United States to establish his own empire. He negotiated with the British for military aid in his plot.

Burr didn't get to him soon enough. He pushed for a central bank for the main reason of tying big business together with big government, laying the groundwork for the fascist state we have today. When they were writing the Constitution he wanted the president to appoint the governors of the states. The guy was despicable and we would be much better off if he had nothing to do with founding of this country. Read anything by Tom Woods about the time period if you want to know about Hamilton and the other founders.
