High School fans demeanor shows up on the field. There was a good game recently where the outcome was determined on a player mouthing off to an official. This team lost because a player thought they could get away with it. They thought since there fans and community wanted to win so badly that there was no accountability for his actions on the field.
The way in which some people actually behaved off the field in essence empowered a player to make a bad decision on the field.

Below is exerts of a fans post on the subject:

Its disgusting that a official would call that unsportsmanlike conduct penalty at that point in the game. If they lost the game making a physical mistake so be it....... But to have some sissy who probably never donned a helmet take a game from you because a young kid said something over a blown call is a hard pill to swallow. He should have pulled the kid aside, looked him in the eye and told him, you could have cost your team the game with your mouth. Very bush league to put something like that on a kid. I'm still in shock over that and some other misses by the zebras. The onside kick, the fumble and the great hit being called a penalty. Probably for me a tougher loss than the 94 West Branch game. I still can't believe he called the sportsman penalty. The good lord ought to give him a month of sleepless nights for cheating the kids with a very "sissy like" call. Took some real balls to make it.

Fans post on the subject :

That officiating crew shouldn't be allowed nowhere near a playoff game EVER again. Thanks to them we'll never know how those last few moments would have played out had they just let what was a great game be decided by the kids who played it all night.

I'm pretty sure I know which game the "fan" is referring to. I was there. The referees did not lose the game for that team. Their defense did.

Its called DISCIPLINE! I saw a state championship lost because a kid pointed to the sky in the end zone and the TD was called back. That team lost 7 - 3.

The youth in society are more violent than ever and the lack of respect translates into sports from Pop Warner to the pros. Let this be a lesson that one may do this at the home stadium, but outside tend to be more neutral in game calling.

You should get your facts correct before you post lies about young kids. There was no mouthing or disrespectful comments made towards the ref. The call was made because the player held on to the ball longer than the ref thought he should after the play was over. I do agree that some of those fans are ignorant to say the least, but you shouldn't group the players in with some of the nut jobs that post on here.

What really makes me laugh is if the d makes a stop on 4th and 8 this conversation never happens.

If Steubenville doesn't get the VERY generous spot to give them a first down (on 4th down) by AN INCH, which ultimately led to a touchdown, this doesn't happen, either.

Is Massillon playing in week 13? I didn't think so. Those uniforms have been at the dry cleaners for 3 weeks now. Go troll on the Massillon 2012 thread and dream about winning a championship on the field.

I can't speak for football rules but as an official for HS Wrestling there is no warning for unsportsmanlike conduct! If the kid mouthed off to the official, penalty end of discussion IMO!

Rules are rules! The official acted based on the rules. There were several times in that game the official pulled players aside to calm them down or warn them on both teams. I hate it when people say "that ref should not have made that call at that point in the game." Thats total crap! Is it ok to make that call in the 1st,2nd or 3rd Quarter? As sad as it is, the kid committed the penalty and it was called. Like it or not you must live with it. Teach your kids discipline and this stuff doesnt happen. Quit with the what ifs! We all could go on here and come up with what ifs for every team.

^^ Well said. I agree. A penalty is a penalty. Just like when Jake Locker threw the ball WAY up in the air after his TD, got the penalty, and they missed the PAT. No matter what time of the game, the players still need to stay within the rules.

Keep crying, baby

We're just laughing at you

BTW to all, the penalty WAS NOT for mouthing off. A different player was arguing with the refs and put both hands on the official. I do not call it a push, but others have

Bottom line, no kid can put his hands on a ref PERIOD!!

Kids like that probably get away with not shaking hands after losses at home too. Bad coaching and/or parenting produces a hole kids.

The plot thickens? from someone saying something to a official, "just holding the ball", "know hands on the official".
