How many different takes on this penalty are there? Kid mouthed off or kid held the ball to long, or now a kid put his hands or pushed a ref????

It was a personal foul is all we know. Is there a video showing what happened? I watched channel 9 replay and no they moved the camera off the action. It was strange.

If the kid held the ball too long it's a 10 yard delay of game penalty. So it is one of the other two. I heard from someone on the side lines a ref was touched by a BR player.

I refuse to believe a ref just threw a flag for fun.

The way in which some people actually behaved off the field in essence empowered a player to make a bad decision on the field.

Below is exerts of a fans post on the subject:

Its disgusting that a official would call that unsportsmanlike conduct penalty at that point in the game. If they lost the game making a physical mistake so be it....... But to have some sissy who probably never donned a helmet take a game from you because a young kid said something over a blown call is a hard pill to swallow. He should have pulled the kid aside, looked him in the eye and told him, you could have cost your team the game with your mouth. Very bush league to put something like that on a kid. I'm still in shock over that and some other misses by the zebras. The onside kick, the fumble and the great hit being called a penalty. Probably for me a tougher loss than the 94 West Branch game. I still can't believe he called the sportsman penalty. The good lord ought to give him a month of sleepless nights for cheating the kids with a very "sissy like" call. Took some real balls to make it.

Fans post on the subject :

That officiating crew shouldn't be allowed nowhere near a playoff game EVER again. Thanks to them we'll never know how those last few moments would have played out had they just let what was a great game be decided by the kids who played it all night.
Another silly post. Please provide your reference for this. Which of the players told you this is how they felt and what happened?

Fascinating to me that you found these players that thought the rules did not apply to them because of some rowdy fans. This is just another silly assumption or a poor attempt to bait people into an argument that does not even exist.

Otherwise, I will assume you equate people on a forum to players on a field.

It was a bullcrap call by a gutless old dumb ref who liked having so much power in his hands ... A travisty ,but its normal in HS football all over the USA .. It just burns me that a university like the one we were playing need so much help from the refs ... they should have just let the boys play the game period... I never seen a penalty for us hittting to hard .. laughable .. We got it stole from us ,but its over .. not only did they make all these bad calls they took two fumble recoveries from us .. .. Im still pulling for Dover even though so many of you hate us so much .. but its over for us 2012 we will be back

Big Red fans are looking at this through rose-colored (or crimson-colored) glasses. I was a complete impartial fan and saw nothing wrong with the calls. Mooney missed a big call in the 4th quarter, too.

Calls were made and calls were missed. I have no problem with any of it. I would like to know what caused the penalty for sure. Either way, I watched the ref go over to Reno and explain something and Reno didn't seem to argue at all. So it's good with me, if it's good with him.

BR played well enough to win. So did Mooney. Case closed.

Threads like this are the problem in this little internet world. One guy stirs the pot and it takes on a life of it's own. Dover has no business worrying about Big Red at all, yet they continue to cause trouble. We just need to be better at ignoring their ignorance.

Steubenville would have had a better chance were their name St. eubenville, rather than Steubenville.

But it wasn't the player holding on to the ball. It was another player back by where the Big Red players were trying to huddle. A player stepped in front of the Back Judge who was moving into his position to get the play started. A Big Red player clearly put both hands on the Officials shoulder, and he was the one that threw the flag,

That was away from the situation where the other player was holding the ball

I believe that was why the officials first marked off 5 yards (for delay) but the Back Judge picked up the ball and marked off the rest of the yardage

Players cannot touch the officials like that. You pay the price

So, you basically just showed us that you 1) don't know the rules and 2) you have no respect for the officials even if they do know the rules. They should bend them because you're "Big Red"

Thanks for the clarification

Did he point before or after crossing the goal line?

Isn't anything after crossing the goal line a DEAD BALL penalty and is enforced on the kickoff?

If it were done as he was running and before he crossed, I could see the official calling it back and enforcing the penalty from the spot he started to point.
