Soooo, is that five per year, or five over three years? It sounds like five over three years, but I'm not positive.

There were rumblings on one OSU board earlier today that the NCAA might be coming in with penalties soon, including a FTM addition. This pretty much confirms it.

On another note, Smith's mea culpa should be the first of two statements -- the second one being his resignation as AD.

I agree Gene has to go. Failure to monitor is an indictment of your athletic director and football coach.

One shoe has dropped and its time to toss the other.

Wow, the never ending punishments continue. I guess the SEC was right, just lie and hamper any investigation as quickly as possible. Self reporting just gets you in more trouble.

What sucks about this one (the jobs-pay thing with a booster) is that Tressel banned this guy from contact with the team, and the AD also told him to stay away.

So he works another angle and gets some players to break the rules, even after they've been told not to, and OSU gets hit with failure to monitor, anyway.

It's time to pass a law that says if someone gives illegal benefits to college athletes, they can face jail time. Perhaps that would help deter some of this crap. Otherwise, you better follow these guys 24-7, because someone is going to get to them.

And yes, I blame the players for doing this even though they know better -- but they did get punished. The boosters never seem to pay any price.

Stop...Stop... Stop....Quit self flagellating. Smith should be fired for incompetence. All he is doing is just giving the NCAA more reasons to add penalties (see what happened to Devier Posey). Nobody else beats themselves up. He is not doing anybody at OSU any favors. I'm beginning to wonder whose side he is on?

I used to think people like you were wrong and the NCAA was always right on this stuff.

I've now reversed my view.

Possibly, but not likely. This was a joint investigation with NCAA and FTM charge was levied because the work hours thing happened after the discounted tats. We have been hearing for a while now that a FTM monitor charge could be coming when they pushed back the date on the final ruling. I think the prevailing logic from the "insiders" is that there will still be no bowl ban, no significant losses of scholies (although the NCAA could slightly add to this), and OSU will be on serious probation (whatver that means). OSU does not just make up self enforced penalties, they are usually informally agreed upon with the NCAA before being realeased.

A couple of funny stories from the documents. Bobby D tried to hide in a locker in 2001 after Tressel had banned him from being around the players. Also, an audit of Pryor's bank account led to the overpaid for work investigation. They found a check from an excavating company for... get ready.... $200. SEC boosters are cackling and rolling a blunt right now to steal a phrase from Whitlock.

If the Bucks are going to be placed on probation and banned from a bowl, I would want it to be this year to get it out the way. Especially since we are out of the national championship picture.

If they're going to place a bowl ban on Ohio State, I wish they would've come out and said so already. This team has been through hell this season. As terrible as this season has gone for the Bucks, they still find themselves in position to win a Big Ten Championship. To take that away from them, (probably) days before they're set to play in the game (should they get there), would just be wrong and heartbreaking. As much as I agree that I'd love to have it done and out of the way, these seniors have been through so much in their final year, if they can get there - they deserve to play for a championship.

They aren't going to give Ohio State a bowl ban. I don't know why people keep bringing this up as even a remote possibility.
