Girard (10-1) comes to week 12 after taking down Canton Central Catholic 35-12 in round one. The offense was solid as was the D in that game and Girard spent a good bit of the second half just trying to run the clock. It was pretty much what a 1 vs 8 seed game should have been.
This week will be a tougher test. Black River (9-2), like Girard, has put up a lot of points this season, but has been shelled pretty good a couple times as well. BL has surrendered 239 points (21 a game) while scoring 436 (39) and Girard has conceded 170 points (15) while accumulating 480 (43). Girards worst defensive effort was against Campbell where they gave up 42 while BL has surrendered 55 and 48 points in two losses.
From what I could find, I think BL runs a wing-t offense ammassing about 3400 yds to date on the ground, and can throw pretty well on top of it with QB Kuntz, a junior who is 60 of 135 passing for 1,057 yards and 13 TDs. Their defense is led by all-state D-end John Guilford (6-4-210), but they, also like Girard, have given up some points along the way.
The Pirates, 9-2, come into week 12 after knocking off Manchester for the second time this season, the first 29-28 and last night, 49-24. Their two losses come to playoff teams, Firelands who beat them 55-26 and Wellington how handed them a 48-21 defeat. Both of those teams were destroyed in their first round games, albeit by state title contenders. Firelands lost to Chagrin Falls 66-14 and Wellington lost to Kenton 74-22, as Maty Mauk broke his brothers national career high school yardage record.
Any thoughts on this game?
