Watching some of these plays solidified what I saw at the game. It seemed like Orrville shied away from contact a lot more than Norwayne. All around, Norwayne played a more physical game.

Did anyone happen to catch the block on the Norwayne screen pass at the 7:04 mark? It was a beautiful kill shot. Can't tell who it was, though.

Honestly, if Orrville couldn't stop Norwayne's RB rushing game (even excluding Wallace), they probably couldn't have stopped Hillsdale's either, and they definitely wouldn't have stopped Smithville's. The run D was definitely a chink in Orrville's armor, and it would have spelled trouble against a solid running team.

I respect you and your opinions, but I would have to disagree with this one....We shut down every run game we faced which included multiple kids who will be playing division I football.... the difference was Norwayne was the most balanced team we played all year. They kept us very honest with the pass, and that is our weak link...pass defense. Norwayne has a 3 headed attack that can all get the job done and it showed last night. Norwayne did something that NO other team was able to do...run the football. Credit goes to them....but to say run oriented Smithville and Hillsdale could've had the same result is a little premature imo and something we will never know.

That's a fair point, and I actually had that very discussion during the game. I suppose I'm speaking more to the line play. I certainly don't seen either Hillsdale or Smithville running in the same way as Norwayne (long breakaways), and that's because of what you just mentioned. Norwayne was able to get much deeper into the Orrville secondary because their passing ability kept the DBs deeper.

I was speaking to the fact that the other two teams would likely have had their way with 4-6 yard carries all night. The linebackers and defensive backfield would not have let them scamper like the Zimmerlys were able to do, because they could have played the run more safely, but the defensive line plays a large role in stopping the run, and Orrville's D-line was sketchy. The Norwayne O-line, good as it is, wasn't the best run blocking line in the conference, so that has an effect on the equation as well.

However, I'm certainly not saying the games still wouldn't have been good ones, as Orrville's pass offense (even the one the other night) would have given Hillsdale and Smithville fits. I don't know how far back you remember, but I would bet it would have the feel of the Round 2 Smithville-Shenandoah game in 2001 ... maybe not such a high score, but a higher scoring affair than most games those teams have seen this year. Orrville would have definitely been all they could handle, particularly on offense, where both were susceptible to the pass (especially Smithville).

You're right though, that we ultimately can't know, because the most intense analysis is so often thrown out the window once the teams hit the field.

It's why they play the game.

If there was ever just ONE game when the Red Riders needed their offense to show up and carry the defense for once this season it was against Norwayne...and we didnt get it done.

Our defense carried us all year and we had one stinker game and the offense couldn'e pick up the slack..as the case all year.

Great win for Norwayne. They simply beat us up and were the better team on Saturday. Good luck the rest of the way Norwayne.

Agreed Old Rider.Norwayne took it to us.Congrats to the Cats.Someone please tell me we were running plays from a playbook.I swear it looked like we were drawing up plays in the dirt when we were kids.Was it just hike it to Drew and see what happens,or were we running routes from a playbook.Receivers standing around while Drew runs for his life.Also we need DB that come up and hit someone.Im tired of hearing about speed,we need football players not track stars.Seeing Big Red on friday, I saw what DBs can do.Dont go off on me,I love our Riders,just think we can improve on a few things.To the kids,you were a pleasure to watch this year.You guys played with alot of heart.I know this hurts alot but know we are very proud of you and what you have accomplished.To the seniors,Good luck in the future,to the rest of the team and Coaches,GO RIDERS!!!!

One thing you could improve on is the use of the space bar.

6 catches for 50 yards...targeted 15 times...nearly half of Drew's 39 attempts were to him.

I'd say that's a fair share....now some may not have been well thrown...and I know of a least 1 that was dropped....but 15 targets is pretty good i think and doesnt speak to you saying he was not being involved in the game plan.

i was wondering the same thing. Orrville's offense just had me scratching my head all game. i thought orrvilles line played a decent game also. If you watch the highlights brenner had all day to pass

At one point I heard a fan on Orrville's side yell jokingly, "Throw another bomb!" Everyone in our area got a laugh.

It almost appeared as if Brenner was calling the offense and making his own decisions. As some have noted... " a backyard game". I never understood why the running game was never really attempted to be established? Even with Monheim hurt...there are other back that could have done work. I fully expected Lichti to come in and Brenner to move to WR or even assist out of the backfield in a dual quarterback threat scenario. Im still baffled at 39? pass attempts...30 of which were just bombs.....actually, if Brenner tucks and goes...several times there were lanes and I saw big play potential developing if he had the poise to tuck and run. All in all...in appeared as #11 tried to BE THE GAME....instead of utilizing ALL the playmakers.

I actually thought they targeted Turner too much against Norwayne. Norwayne knew we would go to him and at times they had 3 or 4 db's on him and we still threw his way. We have 3 or 4 other wr's out there that can catch the ball. I do believe in getting the ball in Turners hands as much as you can but, I feel we needed to make Norwayne respect the other wr's out there then take a shot with Turner. Still a good year from the Riders.

Another weapon Norwayne had in its hip pocket... Harbour has been onboard in preparing for Orrville before (i think) under Whiting. So he was familiar with Orrville more so than people gave credit. You can also bet that he was in the company of Whiting looking at films.....just an assumption on my part.

He had time, but he was the one making that time. The Norwayne defense penetrated theO-line consistently and stayed balanced so as not to let Brenner bolt too often. He showed his athleticism and why he's a D1 athlete by extending a LOT of plays, but he really wasn't ever able to set and throw like you want a QB to be able to do.

For what it's worth, Monheim did get 9 carries, but the D was keying him and held him to 2 yards a carry. I honestly don't blame Orrville for not sticking to it too religiously, as they do have the athletes for a good passing game. It just seemed like they couldn't pull that together the further along the game went.

I honestly wondered about this before the game.

Northwest is much like Norwayne in the fact of Beers as a good RB and Riley a gunslinger, running 5 wide. So the NOrthwest/Orrville matchup would have been eerily similiar to the Norwayne/Orrville match-up in terms of Offense vs Orrvilles defense.
