World Champion.

The iconic 39-year-old surfer - he turns 40 on the 11th February - is simultaneously the youngest and oldest world champion in the history of surfing. Slater won in 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2011. No one else has won more than 4 since the world tour started in 1976.

Slater, a crossover star who has been one of surfing's greatest ambassadors, didn't bask in pure joy because Wednesday was the first anniversary of the death of his friend Andy Irons, a three-time world champion. He died from cardiac arrest because of blockage of a main artery, according to an autopsy report.

Surfers started the second day of competition at Ocean Beach by collectively paddling to the lineup to honor Irons.

Not anymore. Used to all the time in the 80s/90s. Too many knee & back problems now, and I see tons of sharks in my kayak.

What are sharks doing in your kayak? They must be pretty small sharks! :)

One time I was paddling out after riding a good wave in, and saw a huge shark between 2 others guys all on the same wave. Another time I was standing in waist deep and got a serious bump on the thigh. Too close for comfort. In '08 in Volusia we had 22 bites. http://www.news-journalonline.com/special/sharkattacks/

I thought irons drug od'd?
Went to the us open in hntngtn beach this summer. Kelly had a great semis then got a gift in the final to win his 11th.

Slater is the marquee name but think andino is the future. Kid can rip it.

I went 2 summers ago. It was a nice event to attend.

Congrats to Slater, he is def the GOAT when it comes to surfing. Surfing is a very humbling sport, especially for people who are first starting out.

What in the world happened to Slater between the year '98 and '05?!? For such a long trail of dominance, why didn't he win anything during that gap?

Slater began surfing the Aussie circuit and didn't compete in at the US Open or Hurley Pro. The US Open didn't get big again till the late 2000's when Hurley bought the rights and rescued it from OP.

I think Machado got 15K or something for winning back in 2000, Slater would have netted at least 100K for a win on the Aussie circuit or at Trestles.

**slater competed in 2001 and 2002, unsure about the mid 2000's when Foster's Beer sponsored the event.

There is no question about it, Kelly Slater is to surfing what Michael Jordan was to Basketball, Wayne Gretzky to hockey, and Babe Ruth to baseball.

I used to surf Sebastian with Kelly when we were in High School. He really was a great guy even back then. First time I saw he had his own video game I laughed like crazy. When I saw him on Baywatch, I got jealous.

He really is a class act though. Most people that are that iconic in their sport are a bit stuck on themselves. Kelly never really was.

OCEAN BEACH, San Francisco/California (Friday, November 4, 2011) –
The ASP has admitted that, due to a calculation error within its rankings’ system, the 2011 ASP World Title has yet to be officially decided and that Kelly Slater (USA), 39, was prematurely awarded his 11th ASP World Title on Wednesday.

funny thing is Slater caught the error himself and alerted ASP.

He will still win it, just have to wait one more event to make it official.
