If he hasn't been contacted by a defender and is still eligible to make forward progress. That wasn't the case here, but could be a case where the ground can cause a fumble.

Yeah but if he hadn't been contacted it would have been a TD because he fumbled after the ball crossed the plane. I'm with LJ it was a dumb and pointless thing for the ref to say.

I agree, I was just pointing out there are cases when the ground can cause fumbles.
