Post WWII I’d take Jim Brown, Walter Payton, Gayle Sayers and Bo Jackson all above Barry Sanders.

No one has even come close to Jim Brown's 5.2 career ypc. Until somebody does, he is #1.
If Jim Brown didn't retire early or had a 16 game schedule all his records would be untouchable.

^ Not for a career's worth of carries. Jamaal Charles was only .02 yards per carry off Brown's single season record last year, though.

I know. I meant that a 0.2 yards per carry difference isn't very close for a career stat, in my opinion.

Let me explain my thinking. Over his career, Sanders had 703 more carries. If you gave Jim Brown 703 more carries, he would only need to average 4.2 ypc over those 703 in order to have the same career average as Sanders. That's what the 27th best ypc running back averages this year. In other words, he would have to be a 2011 Marshawn Lynch. So no, I don't think it is that close.

My only problem with Barry was that half his runs were for no gain or for a loss. The Lions never won with him, mainly because they were saddled with 3rd and long all the time.
I loved Walter Peyton. Pound for pound, he was the best. Bo Jackson was unreal too. But for me, the 2 best pure all purpose running backs were Jimmy and OJ.

YPC is important no doubt. But with that logic, Jimmy Brown was only the second best runner that played for the Browns. Bo Jackson wasn't the greatest of all time but he was the most talented, no one before or since has had his combination of everything...hell he could've been a hall of famer in 2 different sports.
I'll throw a name into the mix that hasn't been mentioned (probably because he's still playing) and that's LaDainian Tomlinson. Dude was a dominant back in his prime.

That is a good point about Barry...he did seem to be an "all or nothing" kinda guy. Nothing said it more than in (I think) 1997 when he got to his 2000 yard season on a rush (2001 I think) and on the very next play he went for negative 4 I think. BTW, he ended up with 2053 yards that season. He only had 53 yards the first 2 games of the year. He totaled 2000 yards that year in essentially a 14 game season.

I could concede Brown, Payton and Sayers (although I do think Barry was the best) but I can't say Bo was better. Bo was talented and full of potential, but never got to that point due to injury. Jim Brown was a great back, all-time great, as is Barry Sanders. I think we split hairs when saying one is better than the other; however, Brown never faced defenses and schemes like Sanders (and the same can said about Sanders and today's RBs). I was not talking career stats that Jackson had cut due to injury, I was talking who I'd want running for my team.
