Not only did they not win or make it to a final four, but they didn't look like a top 4 team most of the year. Yes, they had injuries before the season, early in the season, and late in the season. They just didn't have the look of a champion from day 1. It seems Roy put all his eggs in this year's basket, but it didn't happen. Now he must rebuilt with a very green team.
Yeah, the team was very inconsistent. I do think they were looking pretty good toward the end of the season, though, and then Henson got hurt. Despite that, they looked like they were ready to contend for a title...and then Kendall went down too.
I'm not saying they weren't playing hard throughout the year, but it honestly looked to me like they were on "cruise control" at times. They came back to win a national championship, and I think they were kinda going through the motions until it was time to step onto the big stage. Then once that time came, they were so banged up that it just didn't happen.
Had they all been healthy, I don't think there's any doubt they would be in the Final Four. I think it's probable that they would have made it to the title game. It would have been hard to beat UK in the title game, but the game at Rupp earlier in the season was a battle. Would have loved to have seen what I truly believe were the two most talented teams playing for a national championship. Doesn't matter now, though. Things just didn't work out.
Next year has the potential to be a disaster. The backcourt should be pretty solid, with a lot of depth. However, Paige and Dex are NOT Kendall Marshall, in my opinion. The frontcourt is gonna be an inexperienced mess unless McAdoo does come back and/or they get a transfer or a late commit.
