Can someone who thinks TCU is a good addition explain why they think that?

Student population of around 8-9,000.
Tiny stadium of around 40,000 and they couldn't even sell out all of their home games during their undefeated season.
They just did a renovation on the stadium that REDUCED the size of it.
Small alumni base, no national following, hell...they don't even have a big following in their home state.

If the BXII loses missouri and start filling the conference with shit like TCU, Louisville, Tulane, BYU, they should lose their automatic BCS bid. Oklahoma or Texas will literally coast the entire season, every season into the title game.

It would still be a better conference than the Big East and probably ACC are right now.

From a strictly football perspective (since this is a football board) - TCU has finished the season ranked in the top 25 in 7/10 years this decade, and in the top 10 four times since 2005. While 42,000 fans isn't huge, it was higher last season than several BCS schools. Also, it's pretty obvious that either the Big East or Big 12 is going to die as a football conference. Since TCU was originally going to join the BE, luring them away to the Big 12 would be significant for the conference's survival.

I see. I found this elsewhere. When I originally saw it the plans for future years must not have been finalized yet.
Phase 1 of Amon Carter Stadium renovation involves demolition and reconstruction of the west side (the larger, home side with an upper deck) and north endzone. This will be only partially complete for the 2011 season (no upper level on west side) and will make the seating capacity for that season about 30k (get your season ticket order in early).

Phase 1 will be completed prior to the 2012 season, with capacity at about 40k (including about 24 luxury suites).

Phase 2 involves renovation of the east side with the plans flexible to add an upper level to bring the capacity up to 50k if indicated. This should be complete by start of the 2013 season.

i don't really think it's a great addition but they did have to add somebody, so might as well start by securing an already held foot-hold in dallas (oklahoma was probably in favor of tcu because its gets them two games in a season in the dallas fort worth area every other year). i still think the best potential big 12 candidate is usf, however

I think BYU is definitely the best potential candidate. Solid programs in football and basketball, a big school (would be the 2nd biggest enrollment in the conference), a significant fan base (60k attendance and sizable TV market in SLC/Provo), not to mention they are the Mormon school of choice and a pretty good academic school as well.

Despite the success this past decade, BSU would be a terrible selection. They would be thousands of miles away from the rest of the conference, is a terrible academic institution (it was a JUCO up to about 40 years ago), small media market, football is the only sport that would be competitive in the conference and there is no guarantee that the football program would continue to be successful once their HC leaves.

There was some talk that the conference was trying to get that buyout up to $20 million or more. Too bad for them half of the conference is planning on leaving so it never really gained much traction.
