A big loss for Matta and the guys. I think he would have been a contributor this year.

They say he's going to retake a class and the ACT to re-qualify.

I don't expect to ever see him in an OSU uniform. These things rarely work out.

Doubt he ever suits up. Buckeyes wont wait for him. He will probably end up at a JUCO.

That would be a remarkable achievement and I wish him well in the effort. One good thing about being on quarters (well until next fall) is that you have a chance to get people back earlier if they can qualify.

Ross spending a couple months in Columbus this summer playing with the guys is probably a good motivator for him. He has friendships with the team now. That's an aspect I hadn't considered for my earlier post. Given he's close to some of these guys now, I'm hoping he proves the doubters wrong and gets back in time for most of the Big Ten season.

I didnt consider that he could be eligible this year. I thought he would have to wait until next season. That kind of changes things. If he couldnt come back this soon, I doubt the Bucks would hold a scholly for the kid.

Disagree. If he's committed to Matta he will hold a spot for him. He's too talented not to.

He was the one new guy who OSU was going to really rely on. This hurts.

I agree with this. This kid is really talented. And I heard from a very good source that he had an outstanding summer at OSU. They were very high on him. This definately is a big blow. Lets hope he can regain his eligibility. They said it could happen with possibility he could be eligible by Jan. But at that point, it maybe worth a redshirt depending on how things are going with OSU.

If he's on campus he plays. He has the potential to eventually leave early.

I obviously dont know, because I am not there. But Ive heard this so many times it just falls on my deaf ears.

Granted, a lot of cases the kid simply cant qualify...but still. Phillip Jurkin, Nate Miles, Eric Page off the top of my head in the last couple years. Those were high profile guys as well, 4 and 5 stars. Page obviously was big time talent who was too dumb. People didnt wait for him, he choose UT. Miles just was too stupid, but the only school who did wait was UCONN. Jurkin had to go to Tennessee and not IU cause they didnt wait. Now this years class has Mitch McCary who is going to end up likely out of state (Indiana) because IU and Purdue both moved on. Kid is #3 in the class...

Don't totally disagree with you. It does happen, and could certainly happen. But based on what people are saying, he is committed to OSU. If all goes well, in a perfect world, he could be back and only miss 8 games. We'll see.

Looks like UK may end up getting McGary. Calipari has an in-home visit with him today actually. While this is a loss for OSU, unlike some other programs, it's not going to kill them. Matta has recruited well-enough (both new and returning players) to still be a top 5 team with or without the reliance on a Freshman.

For other schools (see St. John's with their 3 guys ruled ineligible), Mississippi State with Renardo Sidney 2 years ago, Tony Mitchell at Missouri, Jelan Kendrick at Memphis, etc...those teams were significantly stronger with those guys, and lost players the year before that the incoming guys could have been a direct replacement for.

I don't want the kid. Sure he's a great talent, but OSU is more than just an athletic powerhouse. I'd prefer my team to have scholars in the classroom as well as on the field. Let him go to the SEC, they don't care about academics down there.

Sometimes I wonder why so many people on here mock you, but then you make a post like this.

If Ohio State is going to remain relevant in big boy basketball circles, they will continue to work with kids who may be marginal qualifiers -- that's just reality.

I'd prefer OSU to remain a power house and do exactly what they're doing. I trust Matta to make the right call on which kids he wants to try and bring in.

That's your biggest mistake :)

There's no need to wonder.

I see your point but that's not an absolute truth. Just look at Coach K and Duke for the last 25 or so years.

Yeah but name 1 other program that has been successful without any marginal qualifiers (and that is assuming Duke hasn't had any).

It may not be an absolute truth, but it's about as close to one as you can get.

It's a huge loss. He's a one and done type of player. Not having him is gonna hurt.

Indiana did it under Knight, but that started to change right about the time he was let go.
