Last night at precisely 9:06 Pacific Time, the conductor of the Seattle Men's Chorus stopped the rehearsal for an announcement. He said, "As of six minutes ago, Don't Ask Don't Tell is officially dead." You can't believe the amount of applause and cheering that broke out. We then spent the next few minutes listening to members tell their horror stories about being thrown out of the military. The worst story came from a military specialist who had been doing top-secret translations in Arabic for the Army. Truly the Army needed him more than he needed them. Nevertheless, he was discharged.

We gays are often asked what we are still fighting for. There are basically three things. The first is to add sexual orientation to federal non-discrimination policies. The second is gay marriage. The third is to be allowed to be open in the military. If there is a fourth, it is to establish strict rules against bullying in middle schools and high schools. Anti-bullying rules should be both for gay and straight students.

At any rate, we got one of the things we wanted. Getting rid of DADT significantly lessens our position as second-class citizens in America.

Gays and lesbians are celebrating throughout this land of ours. It is a very happy time for us. And we expect more happy times in the near future.

They should have replaced it with "Don't Ask, Don't Care"

Well, for two hundred years, the military cared. At least with this repeal, the U.S. has moved a bit more into the twentieth century.

1. DADT should have been repealed, one of the only things that Obama has done correctly.
2. The anti-discrimination stuff is bull crap and shouldn't happen.
3. Call it gay marriage, civil unions, whatever go ahead and do it, who cares but it should be a state issue, not a federal one (for both homos and heteros).
4. I'm so tired of the "anti-bullying" crap whether its against gays or fat kids, etc. Bullying is wrong, no doubt about it, but to only NOW bring it to the forefront because gays have been bullied is stupid and wrong. Where was the outcry when it was mostly just dorks and fat kids? It reeks of "special" treatment like affirmative action, "protected" classes, etc.
5. You go so far and overstate things so much it is funny. I have a close relative who is a a lesbian, one of my wife's friends is a lesbian, and I have other gay friends and exactly NONE of them are really "celebrating" right now about DADT being repealed. Only FWK and other activists are "celebrating", most gays and lesbians just want to go about their lives without being looked down apon for being gay and they just want to be left alone. Just like most of us heterosexuals.

No. You're stupid and wrong. Bullying has been going on since the beginning of time, but nobody did anything about it until we gays turned it into an issue a few years ago. We're not just trying to help gay kids, we're trying to help all kids who have to put up with this abuse. Teenage suicide is a major problem and it is almost always linked to bullying. And the majority of teenage suicides are of gay and lesbian kids.

As usual, you don't know what you're talking about. The day after Obama announced the repeal of DADT last December, the Seattle Men's Chorus gave a performance. In attendance was Margarethe Cammemeyer, the lesbian colonel who got bounced out of the military for being gay and who ultimately was a major mover and shaker who got DADT eliminated. When it was announced that she was in the audience, she received a ten minute standing ovation from the 2500 people in attendance, most of whom are not gay. The cheering almost brought down the roof.

As far as your gay and lesbian friends are concerned, if they are so apathetic that they don't care that something very good has happened to our community, then to hell with them.

You cant prove me wrong by giving evidence of something that happened at a huge gay event. Thats like saying "they were cheering about it at the gay pride parade". Most gays were happy about repealing DADT but they didnt go out of thekr way to go "celebrate ".

You just showed you are a hateful moron with your last statement. You are no better than those homophobes who bully and bash gays.

Sorry. This could be one of the dumbest things I've ever read on OC. And that's saying something!

I guess I don't see what any of it matters. Of course they shouldn't ban gays, but at the same time, why do gays need to join the military and announce they are gay? Heteros don't do that.

Just seems dumb to me.

Sexual orientation should not be a protected class. Do most job interviews ask if you bang dudes or chicks? It's just another way for gays to get special treatment if they don't get a job to raise hell with "I didn't get the job because I'm gay".

I don't hate the people in our community who are apathetic. I just wonder where they have been all these years.

Saying "to hell with them" isn't just "wondering where they have been", its retarded and makes you sound just as bad as if someone said "I don't like gays, to hell with them". If someone on here posted that you'd be on them like flies on crap. Do you understand your own hypocrisy yet? You show the same vehement hatred towards conservatives, republicans, Christians, etc all while asking for any hatred of homosexuals to be punishable by law.

Oh yes we do. I have gay friends who were in the military who were terrified the entire time they were in it. They were not just at risk of being thrown out, they were also at risk of being imprisoned and of facing court marshal. There was also a very bad set of incidents that happened at the Air Force Academy. A number of gay cadets were sexually assaulted. When they complained to their superiors, they themselves were thrown out of the academy.
