This makes a lot of sense. Playing a primary schedule of all Bee One Gee teams doesn't really do anything for Notre Dame football. Geography has a lot to do with all these moves, but obviously not in the way it previously had. That is also a big reason why I was and would be surprised if WVU ended up in the SEC. That would be the prime example of expansion being counterproductive. It isn't about how many fans travel to games, the SEC isn't hurting for fans. WVU doesn't open up any kind of recruiting ground or worthwhile TV market. It'd just be another team splitting the money with no return to the other schools on the investment. It is the same reason I never bought Clemson/Florida State - the football programs probably fit, but there is no added value by their locations.
