Even though it is Sept 1 when rosters can be expanded and the Phils have won the first 3 of the series and they have a comfortable lead and it is a day game after a night game, Charlie Manuel is not pulling a typical Dusty move and gutting his line-up. He has his big three, Victorino, Utley, and Howard, all starting the game.

Four lefties in a row for the Reds. I wonder if Dusty was "told" he better play Francisco and Alonso? Promising start with Phillips reaching, but then three straight pop-ups, the last two by the first two of the lefties.

Only missed by 1 to 2 inches! The 3rd and 4th lefties, the younger ones, lead-off the 2nd by getting on, but the promise is quickly dashed by two Ks and a grounder. Maybe better luck the 2nd time thru the line-up starting in the 3rd.

Heisey's pinch hit HR takes Worley's 1 run "quality" start after 6 innings to a 4 run non "quality" start in 6+ innings.

You can take that quality start stat and stick it up the ass of whom even coined it.

To me...a quality start is whatever gives you an under 4 ERA for the game. So....2 ER in 6, or 3 in 7+.
It is just a made up stat, probably by some agent like HOLDS, to make their clients look good.

Joey is not a very good hitter on 3-0 cookies! Looks like the tries to swing too hard and gets himself messed up.

I think it was a stat that helped the mediocre pitchers in arbitration and contract talks. The good ones get their $$, but the mediocre ones tout the 'quality start' talk because it sounds good.

Quality starts aren't a very worthy goal when you are facing all the sub 3.0 ERAs of the Phils starters, or if you are a Phils starter trying to compete the others.

I read a quote from Greg Maddux from many years ago. He had pitched and given up I think 1 ER in 7 IP and the reported asked him about only givin up 1 ER in the game and how it should be good enough to win. He commented how it was his job to give up at least one run less than his team scored, keep his team in the game. He said there would be days he gives up 4-5 runs and will get the win because the office scored at least one more run, and on that particular day he didnt do his job because he had given up a run more than what his team scored.

Loved watching him pitch over the years. I would actaully tape his games to watch if I wasnt home. Yeah..I am a loser! He had also said that other pitchers come up to him and ask why he throws from the stretch so much when he is getting his innings in. His response was that becuase the most important pitches he will make in any game is outta the stretch.

What does that have to do with this thread? Nothing really....but i am certain he would call the 'quality start' stat nowadays as fubar

Bastardo demonstrates the negative of putting four lefty hitters in a row, especially when there is only one lefty reliever in the bullpen, such as with the Phils today. One stint of 4 hitters faces and he takes care of the last out in the 7th with the tying run at the plate with the runner on and all of the 8th.

I think "the professor" would agree with you, but maybe not use that language!
