Because the rule is intended to prevent the 60yr-old grandma from giving her ticket to the semi-pro hockey player. These kids were, almost literally, interchangeable. The company did not stick with the spirit of the rules and contest and instead used a technicality to renege.

I just don't like how everyone is praising the father for doing the right thing. Yet, the father didn't care about doing the right thing when he thought his son's had no shot in hell of actually winning the money.
