What college football coaches are on the hot seat heading into this coming season?

Here are a few I can think of off the top of my head.

Ron Zook, Illinois
Jeff Tedford, Cal
Mark Richt, Georgia
Houston Nutt, Ole Miss
Les Miles, LSU
Paul Wulff, Washington State
Rich Neuheisel, UCLA
Greg Schiano, Rutgers
Mack Brown, Texas
Luke Fickell, Ohio State

Who else is on the hot seat?

Turner Gill is probably on a fairly short leash at Kansas (although just entering his second year, he probably won't get canned unless they go something like 2-10).

Dennis Erickson at ASU.

Mack Brown is in no danger whatsoever of being fired.

How can Fickell be considered on the "hot seat"? I'd say he's auditioning for a head coaching job on the biggest stage in college football

If you define it as "have a bad year, no longer have the job", then it applies, although it's certainly a special case.

I guess, but it's just hard for me to imagine any first year coach being on the "hot seat"....just sayin'

Brian Kelly. After murdering an innocent child and getting away with it, the only way the Christian University let's him stay is if he wins a game that someone outside of South Bend cares about.

If I were a ND fan, I wouldn't hold my breath; its been 20+ years.

So is he going to try and get one scheduled before the season is over?

nah, Iowa will go 7-5 during the regular season, lose their bowl game and Kirk will still somehow land on some publication's list of top 10 college coaches.

I've never understood the media's love for this guy. Three times he's been named Big Ten Coach of the Year. Jim Tressel won seven Big Ten titles in ten years and was never named COY. After the past two season and the money Iowa is paying him, he's not going anywhere.

Fickell is on the hot seat because he's as likely as anyone to lose their job at the end of the season.

Mack Brown isn't going to get fired, however, if Texas has a season similar to last year, his seat in Austin is going to be getting extremely hot. What have you done for me lately?

I think Hot Seat implies that people are angry and upset and turning up the heat on the coach.

No one is angry or upset with Fickell. Everyone understands that he is auditioning for a job essentially and has to have a remarkable season to have a shot. If he doesn't do so well people won't be out for his head... they just realize he won't be the head coach next year.

I can agree with this. I think a lot of people have almost a care free attitude with him. If he does good, then great, you can keep him around and build off of it. If he doesn't do so hot, oh well, you guys will just get whoever you want because you were planning on it anyway.

thank you..I didn't think it needed to be explained, but I guess I was giving some people too much credit...well done, Fly

There aren't enough people or enough tradition in Iowa for people to get that pissed about it. I mean, their all time record is 581-512-39. Kirk probably wouldn't last long with his success at other places, but Iowa is content with being in the an upper middle of the road/lowest of the upper tier in the Big 10.

Good point. Notre Dame fans are probably banking on their powderpuff schedule to win them a BCS bowl they don't deserve. The problem is, they will lose because they aren't going to be anywhere as good as the team they are playing. Their only shot is to get lucky and play the Big East champ.

Eh, they've been trying that for a few years now. Then outta nowhere their schedule turns out to be stocked with powerhouses like Navy and Tulsa and Air Force and Michigan.

Not even sure that'll work for them. Refer to Pitt, Syracuse, and Connecticut the last few years.

Schiano is not on the hot seat lol

He went to 5 straight bowl games with a program that hasn't done anything since the 70s..last year was bad but it was the first bad one in 7 seasons.

Now if he goes 4-8 this year...yes, hot seat.

Schiano should have jumped ship while he still had value. Dude looks kind of dumb now.

Cue the Domers defending these programs as National Powerhouses.

He's obviously not about 'jumping ship' like most coaches are. Man loves Rutgers and has no intentions of leaving.

We'll see.

I think he'll take his talents elsewhere when he gets his next chance to leave town. You can't win consistently at Rutgers
