Does anyone know what is required to enroll a student at a school? Specifically a foreign exchange student?
My wife wanted to host a foreign exchange student and she knew someone who was interning with a group that brings students over. We went through the interview process, were approved and picked out a girl that we thought would be a good fit for our family. When the group contacted the school, they were told they only worked with one specific group and that they would not enroll her. Does anyone know if I have any options or am I just SOL? It's frustrating to me that I pay school taxes, but when I want to send someone to the school they aren't willing to provide the service I pay for.

It sounds like mabe you have to have guardianship to enroll a child unless it is through the program the school sets up?

Quick google search makes it look like it is up to the school.FatHobbit;849719 wrote:Does anyone know what is required to enroll a student at a school? Specifically a foreign exchange student?

Is the child from a hard-working country? Perhaps you could put them to work around the house.

Thanks, that's what I was afraid of. I did search for it, but wasn't finding anything specific that was telling me they could refuse. (I admit I did not look hard, the first page was all about individual schools so I punted and posted here.se-alum;849733 wrote:Quick google search makes it look like it is up to the school.

We did this once on russianbrides.com. It is kind of a scam, but hopefully you'll get a few good threesomes in before she steals your credit cards and jets off.

Or he/she could make clothes, shoes, and electronics for the family. Give the kid a dimly lit, small room in the basement and they'll feel right at home.

Or a tortilla press, if the child is from a latin country. Homemade tortillas are boss.

Eh, I think they'd prefer to work outside. Mowing the lawn, trimming hedges, spreading mulch, etc.

I would go to this website, and contact a PAC member in your county/area.FatHobbit;849744 wrote:Thanks, that's what I was afraid of. Our school district (Jonathon Alder) isn't listed. The districts listed in out county are either Columbus or Dublin. Do you think they could be helpful? I'm guessing not, but I couldn't be more ignorant about what I'm trying to do here.

You could tell all the local schools that she's a basketball phenom and you're open to the highest bidder.

I would appreciate that. Until last week we were under the impression that everything was on track and then we found out they only work with specific groups. (Apparently it was communicated to the group that sets it up, but he thought he would be able to persuade them to let her in I guess.) I would probably just let it go, but she is supposed to fly here in 12 days and I feel bad for her getting the rug pulled out from under her with that little notice. I doubt they would be able to find a replacement home for her with that short of a notice.

Well that is pretty shitty. Are you paying this group anything?

No. But I think to be a foreign exchange student they have to pay about 8000 euros, so she should be really pissed. (We haven't been able to talk to her yet because they were still finalizing all the details.)

So basically they are just trying to get their money and hoping that things work out. I am pretty sure that is the opposite of the point of the organization

That is somewhat my feeling. I could be wrong. If there wasn't a 15 year old girl thinking she was about to be an exchange student I would be willing to let it all go.

The PAC as a whole may be helpful. I would at least inquire about it. Are there no other schooling options??

They want me to drive her to a neighboring school district every day.

Maybe you could home school her. Meh. She would probably end up a socially defunct.

I've been trying to host 17 year old swedish twin exchange students for years. I keep getting blocked at the stage of mentioning it to my wife.

Home school is the way to go. You could be banging her everyday after your wife leaves the house. If you have any friends, you can host a poker night once a week, then pimp her out to make extra money during the game, if she complains tell her that she can go back to the 3rd world country she came from and make shoes for $ 12.00 a month.
