Yeah, there is nothing wrong with some brainless, popcorn movies. Not every movie aims to win Oscars...some just aim to entertain

Ehh that was just a generality. The point I was trying to make was that "The Master" just isn't within reach of some people

People who don't like 'The Master' probably prefer Michael Bay movies and the Rush Hour series.

I liked The Master but I can see where some were bored with it. There is no denying it was a well made movie with good acting though.

I was hoping Jim Carrey would be the villain.

What'd you think of Snitch BD? The only showing I can see tonight is 9:55 and I'm not sure if I want to stay out that late for a movie that won't entertain me.

Also, anyone seen Phantom?

Snitch wasn't bad. I think it's worth a look.

Just watched The Master on the plane. Perfect acting by Phoenix and Hoffman. And even on a $&%^ty flight screen you could tell it was beautifully filmed and great score by the guy from Radiohead. It is PT Anderson so you shouldn't expect a typical 3-act story, but even then there were moments when it didn't seem to flow. It is an art house film with a director that wasn't targeting the usual audience. It wasn't the most engrossing story in the world but the acting/filming alone should have garnered a Best Picture nomination. IIRC the Academy can nominate up to 10 and this year only nominated 9.

Saw Life of Pi on VOD last night- how in the hell was it even mentioned in the same breath as Argo and Lincoln?

I saw Burt Wonderstone yesterday. It was pretty much what I expected (a soso movie), but it had a few laugh out loud parts.

#1 (and most important):popularity of book

#2 visual effects

#3 feel-good story that the Academy always likes (see Forrest Gump and Slumdog Millionaire)

I agree it wasn't on par with the two films you mentioned, but it was tailor made to get nominated (and in some cases win) awards. I thought it was ok but have no desire to watch it again. I saw the story and the effects and was glad I saw it but that was it. That said many of my friends absolutely loved it.

Daniel Day-Lewis to retire for 5 years...which sort of contradicts the definition of 'retire' but yeah, 5 years not doing a movie.

Seems like he has always just waited on the perfect roles anyhow. Not like Joseph Gordon Levitt who is in every movie made since 2009

Just finished The Master. It wasn't terrible like S&L said, but PSH and Phoenix saved it with their acting. The plot was slow and boring. It didnt flow that well and seemed a bit choppy at parts.

Won't watch again.

Saw The Call last night. I will say it kept me entertained the entire time. There were some 'smh' moments, but I certainly enjoyed it.
