Huh? Seems to me it's a program supported by the Telecom industry and Virgin Mobile to provide cell phones with limited service to people who wouldn't usually be able to afford one. I ... don't get how people would be upset about it.

I am thinking that it is more benefits our tax dollars pay for (not sure if this is govt funded but there are ones that are) and the poor not only get a place to stay on our dime but they get cell phones and cars and food, ect.....

Yes, it's funded by the Universal Service Fund (along with Virgin), started in 1997, which takes a percentage of international and interstate revenues from telecom companies, and sets it aside for increasing access to telecommunication services. Fuckin scary shit.

This is paid for by the telecommunications industry, not the Federal gov't. All telecommunication providers pay into a fund based on their revenues, in turn, that fund is used to pay for programs like this.

Indeed, one should blame the FDR administration and the Communications Act of 1934, which calls "to make available, so far as possible, to all the people of the United States a rapid, efficient, Nation-wide, and world-wide wire and radio communication service with adequate facilities at reasonable charges". Without that little ditty none of this is possible. I say we go back in time and break his legs.

From your link...
The free phones aren't a new, Obama-era benefit; they're actually part of a program that started back in 1997 called LifeLine, which followed from the Telecommunications Act of 1996. The program was enhanced in 2005 during the Bush administration, and SafeLink started disbursing free phones in 2008.
Damn those bleeding heart.......conservatives?
