This is a pet peeve of mine that comes from dining out. The last 10 times we have been in a restaurant, the server asks that question. I don't like how it sounds and I would prefer "How is everything?"..period! Leave off the "tasting"! End of rant. What say you OC Chatterers?

You must have a wonderful life if this is something that gets to you. Atleast your server came to your table and asked you something. I don't really care what they say as long as they are there if I need something.

My point is that when the server adds "tasting" to the statement, then that specifically refers to the food. Maybe I need more napkins, a spoon, or more dressing, or...heaven forbid..A-1! ;-).

I am a good tipper and don't hold it against them, though. I was wondering if this is now what is taught to servers.

Guess: the server should know how the service is since he/she is the one doing it. The cook doesn't come out and ask you about the food so the server serves as the proxy. I wouldn't get worked up over it.

I like it when the server drops by periodically and asks if everything is ok. Using the word "tastes" implies that she cares whether the food is good or not and I think it's a nice thing. Plus, if you need something, it's nice to know that every now and then she will be coming by just to check on how things are at your table.

I don't like the quote. My wife is big into restaurant stuff, and she says it isn't a good thing either. She opened a couple restaurants in Toledo, managed, etc. Another thing that bothers me is that they don't ask you for refills, etc. We were dining out last week and I had been done with my beer and waiting for a refill. He asked my wife if she wanted more tea. He asked us if we were done with our empty plates. By the time it was all said/done, my beer was empty for 30 minutes and our waiter never once asked me if I'd like another.

Yes. That is one thing I was taught to ask. Also, if I'm checking on all my tables at once I don't want to say the same thing to each one so I mix it up.

I hate repeating myself 100 times in a row but it is unavoidable.

Why wouldn't you just ask for another beer? Don't let your ignorance define the quality of a wait staff. Moran!

That server just sucked then. Always pay attention to refills. However, if you gulp your drink within 10 seconds of getting it, expect to wait for a refill. You are not my only table I can't keep walking back n forth with drinks just for you.

This is also a good point. If a drink doesn't have free refills you should request but the server should ask at least once.

Doesn't mean you can't request things. In your situation it sounds like the server didn't think you wanted another beer but should have asked. I walk by my tables to give them an opportunity to flag me down. I'm not interrupting your conversation but I'm still around for you. If you're afraid to flag me down, you may wait because I don't read minds.
